Chapter Three- Conducting Business Ethically and Responsibly
Topic-Ethics in the workplace (Page 47)
Summary
Article “Penal staff endangered kids by taking them to work, watchdog says” (Published Feb. 04, 2016 by The Globe and Mail)
Employees at a correctional facility were coming with their children to the workplace in what was against the law. This happened at the Saskatchewan Healing Lodge for almost a year and contributed to poor management activities (Maum 2016). These are reports from the Office of the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner who revealed 21 employees violated the laws about staff conducts and morals. More problems arose when managers allowed the practice to continue under their watch. The Country general services did not know of the ongoing activities in the institution (Maum 2016). The prosecutor gave orders that correctional facilities be investigated to find out their practices.
The alarm about the employees began in 2015 when two employees brought their children to the correctional facility. It was worse that the employees were under supervision inmates. Such an act jeopardized their safety and prompted a wider investigation to understand the scope of the matter (Maum 2016). Investigations pointed out the repeated practice by members and hampered the reputation of the facility. Reports came from the intelligence body showing different acts of misconduct like sexual immorality and assaults within facilities. Finally, a warning was given that people need the right standards of professionalism and keeping to the ethical regulations at the workplace.
Topic Analysis
Workers must maintain professionalism at their workplaces. Some of these issues include ensuring no abuse to people and their rights. It is also absurd to create discomfort by coming in with what an organization does not approve (Maum 2016). The staff members in the correctional facility caused trouble by bringing children to the working environment. Forcing the inmates to take care of them is an extension of misconduct as it points to the assigning of illegal duties to people not qualified. Besides, it was a violation of the rights of children in that environment.
The management of the correctional facility looked reluctant in ensuring morals in the workplace is outstanding. Managers need to invest their energy in ensuring staffs follow all the rules and do not attempt to compromise the standards set by organizations. Inadequate supervision of each individuals conduct did not reveal these issues early. In case the management had strict rules to ensure morals, these violations of rights and disobedience to working environment reduced.
