Standing Female Worshipper
Ancient societies used to communicate their sociocultural beliefs and practices, as well as whatever they were experiencing at the time, through artworks such as sculptures. To this end therefore, they ensured that their history was well-preserved. One such sculpture is the Standing Female Worshipper; a stone-sculpture statue of a standing female that has her hands are folded in front of her chest. It was found in the painting of a mud-brick bench at one of the cellars in the temple of Inanna at Nippur, Sumerian. This statue was found in between 2600-2500 B.C. It was believed to be one of the gods among other gods, where each had a specified magical power and duty. Some of the gods in the Sumerian culture included the god of heavens called An, the god of storm and wind known as Enlil, the god of humanity and water called Enki, the god of the moon, the god of justice and the sun, and Inanna, the goddess of procreation and sex. All these were gods, and a characteristic representation of the Sumerian society.
The Sumerian society was one that was quite religious. Much of their practices revolved around divinity and their gods. It is perhaps why the sculpture is very elaborate in its carvings as well as having been well-preserved. Standing Female Worshipper was a dedication to the goddess of exuberance.
