Art Assignment Visual & Performing Arts Research Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

In 3 double-spaced pages, you should write a report on the status of contemporary art in Toronto. You should discuss the relevant institutions, as well as your past and current experiences with them, if any.

Use our lectures as a guide to approaching the art scene of a city. What are the institutional structures and human factors that influence it? Are there specific aspects of Toronto's demographics, politics, geographical location and economic conditions that effect the state of contemporary art in the city? You can also follow a comparative approach, comparing Toronto with a city that we have discussed in class, or one that you are familiar with. In this case, you should make sure to keep the focus on Toronto. While the tone of the paper can be journalistic, you are expected to be as analytical as possible: a simple listing of what's going on in the city is not enough! You will also be evaluated for your ability to incorporate readings from our class, as well as our discussions, into your paper.

Given the nature of the topic and the current restrictions on library use etc., you might have to rely on internet sources for this assignment. You should always cite them appropriately! (See document on Paper Specifications) Please use the internet wisely, opting for reliable sources such as art magazines, daily newspapers, museum and gallery websites, etc. Unvetted sources such as social media posts, blogs, etc. should be avoided.

Please analysis comprehensively. Take Paris as an example, in nineteenth-century people who live in Paris are called flaneur (literally meaning 'stroller', 'lounger', 'saunterer', or 'loafer'), so during that period Paris artists are more likely to create art about their daily life.

Most people think art to be great masterpieces of times long gone. However, art still exists due to its ability to adapt to the changing world. The art of the 20th and 21st century is known as contemporary. Modern art is often difficult to define because it doesn’t have its own unique style. This essay is a reflection of the factors affecting contemporary art in Toronto.
Toronto is the capital city of Ontario, Canada. With a population of 2,731, 571 in the year 2016, it is the most densely populated city in Canada. Toronto is a center for all kinds of art including music, theatre, motion picture and television production. The city is also home to various cultural institutions such as museums, art galleries, entertainment district, historical sites and sport stadiums. There are some factors that affect art in Toronto: The first factor is institutional support. Institutions like the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and the Institute of Contemporary Culture often hold art galleries where different pieces of art are showcased. These museums are globally renowned and attract people from all parts of the world. Gallery representation often enforces an artist’s career. For instance, some of the prominent artists who found homes in Toronto like Tom Thomson, Douglas Coupland, Frank Gehry and Shary Boyle have become more popular through the museums that showcase their pieces of artwork. Secondly, art market presence also impacts art. Nowadays, artists who rebel against the art machine by avoiding the gallery system and severing all market ties negatively impact their markets.[England, Lauren. Additionally, if an artist has galleries or non-profits supporting him the market might be profitable. Galleries may help artists get press coverage and major fixtures in today’s markets. They can also help them to get esteemed residencies, grants or competitive advantage in large scale exhibitions. There are 6 popular galleries in Toronto. The first one is the Cooper Cole gallery. This gallery was opened in the year 2009 by Simon Cole. The reason being, he wanted to distance himself and his rooster of artists. The gallery showcases a broad range of work from abstract paintings to sculptures.[4 Canadian Art. "Art Policy Vs.
