You will be required to prepare for each of the scheduled discussions as follows:
1. Research key sustainability issues related to the discussion topic for that scheduled session – the 3 discussion topics are ‘Technological Innovation’, ‘Socio-Cultural Innovation’, and ‘Political and Legislative/Regulatory Innovation’. This research should be based on credible, high quality, source material. As an example, when addressing technological innovation, you may look at the challenges of clean energy production for events. When discussing socio-cultural innovation, you may look at the issues of mega-events and modern slavery. When discussing political and legislative/regulatory innovation you may address challenges such as regulating the reduction of the carbon footprint of events. The point is that you are building a strong research base around a topic that interests you.
2. Identify how the topic under discussion relates to the UN SDGs – it may be useful to select a specific SDG to focus on. We want to see how the challenge that you have identified can be framed in terms of sustainable development.
3. Identify potential solutions to aspects of the challenges that you have identified – the potential solutions may come in the form of case studies of best practice that could be distributed more widely within the industry, alternatively you may identify innovative solutions from other industries that could be applied within an experience management sector. You may also suggest original solutions of your own that can be supported with research material. The important thing to consider is that any suggestions for innovation should be based on a credible and persuasive argument.
4. Discuss your research findings within the seminar discussion – You will be required to clarify the scope of the issue that you have identified, highlight relevant UN SDG(s) that you have identified and propose your suggested innovative solution(s). As part of the discussion, you will be expected to expand on your approach to research (including key authors/sources). You will also be prepared to respond to ongoing questions and comments. It is important to understand that you are expected to articulate your findings with confidence and communicate an evidence-based position that you can defend rigorously. It is also important to understand that this is NOT a presentation – it is a discussion, and we are not looking for a long, scripted, monologue. The module team member will ask questions at any time and prompt questions from the rest of the group. We will look for opinions and perspectives from your colleagues and we will seek to interrogate your conclusions and you should be able to defend your position.
5. Help to facilitate the group discussion – There is an expectation that all members of the seminar group are respectful of others and allow everyone to express themselves. To help achieve this goal, you must be fully prepared and will be expected to communicate points in a concise manner and to engage in discussions by adopting a questioning approach. The debate moderator (member of the teaching team) will help to facilitate engagement from all group members but, ultimately, you must be willing to contribute.
6. Produce a clear and comprehensive bibliography – You will have the opportunity to submit a bibliography for each of the seminar discussions. This is not a formal requirement of the assessment, but it will allow the teaching team to better understand the research that you have undertaken.

Introduction
Since the 1950s, technological innovations have been at the center of the world's economic growth and development. The renewable energy sector has benefited greatly from technological innovations that support the production of clean energy. Some of the changes achieved through technological innovations are consistent with SDG goal 9, which aims to upgrade industrial sectors' technological capabilities in all countries. Despite extensive technological innovation resources, challenges that hinder the production of clean energy still exist. Likewise, the concentration of ownership of technological innovation resources into people's hands from developed countries has harmed sustainable efforts in developing nations. The establishment of laws that motivate and protect start-ups from established coal factories can eliminate the challenges that affect clean energy production. On the other hand, the provision of incentives can ensure that owners of technological innovation resources realign their objectives with sustainable development goals.
Issues
Among the issues related to technological innovation are clean energy production and ownership of technological resources. Studies indicate that most countries have an enormous potential for renewable energy production (Dincer and Acar, 2015; Jinfeng et al., 2016). However, due to challenges that range from cost to time, most countries have ignored the production of renewable energy. For instance, India is rich in both renewable and conventional energy sources, yet it has concentrated on coal due to the relatively low cost involved in coal production (Gupta and Purohit, 2019). Likewise, in the US, renewable energy production has been ignored because the infrastructural changes required for the production of renewable energy are prohibitive in terms of time and cost (Stram, 2016).
On the other hand, the objectives of owners of technological innovation resources do not align with sustainable development goals. According to UNU-IHDP UNEP (2014), 78% of technological innovation resources are owned by people from developed countries that focus on financial prospect areas rather than sustainability. The problems of neglected crops and diseases, for which few innovations have been developed, exemplify unequal distribution in the ownership of technological innovation resources.
Potential solutions
Challenges that hinder clean energy production mainly exist because of the under-regulation of the rapidly innovating renewable energy market (Van Hees, 2018). As a result, a potential solution to the challenges that face clean energy production involves the establishment of laws that encourage investors to invest and produce clean energy. For instance, in the case of wind energy, legislation that exempts start-ups from paying taxes in their first three years of operation and mandates the government to compensate them the amount they used to install transmission lines will promote the production of clean energy.
