Neuroscience of the New Age Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Neuroscience of the New Age Neuroscience is a branch of science that studies the development of the nervous system, its structure and what it does. Given that the brain is the central nervous system, neuroscientists study the way that the brain functions and how it impacts behavior and the cognitive functions. However, the study is not only focused on the normal nervous system functions but also on the disorders associated with the neurodevelopment, psychiatric and neurological aspects. Neuroscience has developed over the ages and is coming to a new frontier with new techniques and insights on how better to apply the knowledge in various fields such as health, law and business.[Bill Newsome, "Neuroscience For A New Age: How Brain Science Will Shape Our Future", video (You Tube: Stanford Alumni, 2013).] In 2013, Professor Bill Newsome gave a talk on how neuroscience in the new age is going to influence the future from an interdisciplinary approach. In his talk Bill brings out three of the most important sections that neuroscience in the new age is going to affect among the; how it is going to affect the health sector, law and how it will influence business and economics.[Bill Newsome, "Neuroscience For A New Age: How Brain Science Will Shape Our Future", video (You Tube: Stanford Alumni, 2013).] With reference to health, there have been some national efforts starting from the white house on how best the science can be integrated in the health sector and how best the study can be expanded and applied. In the health sector one of the applications that are being developed are called the deep brain stimulation. This relates to having an electrode inserted in specific parts of the brain depending on the area of interest and connected to a pacemaker, such that the area of interest is constantly stimulated from time to time. Currently there roughly one hundred thousand patients that have been implanted with these electrodes. Most of the patients are those that have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, substance abuse, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, borderline personality disorder, Obsessive compulsive disorder and essential tremors. In of the cases that was documented the patient was suffering from essential tremors, where her body was constantly shaking. It was quite intense such that, even basic activities such as feeding herself and walking were a task and got to a point where she constantly confined to a wheelchair as she could not control her body. Sometimes that disease would get worse and this meant that she would not even control the muscle of her face as they froze in position making her face emotionless. Later on when an electrode is implanted on one of her hemispheres, she was able to walk. Later on the second electrode was implanted on the other side of the side of the brain and the results were over and above what was expected. She now could even run not just walk and manage activities such feeding herself. This is largely not a cure for Parkinson's disease but a solution to give the patient back their abilities for a period of two to three years which...
