Information technology (IT) governance is crucial to enabling business goals and business competitiveness as well as supporting functions in an organization. One way to assess the effectiveness of IT governance is to measure the IT performance and the competitiveness linked to relying on IT (Kude et al., 2018). The leadership in an organization focuses on maintaining the strategies and objectives, and IT resources can help to achieve this. As such, the management is crucial in designing and implementing IT governance, but the board takes responsibility for the governance process. Optimizing the technological resources is a priority in IT governance where there is strategic alignment and focus on enhancing the IT capabilities.
Both the employees and the management need adequate digital skills to improve the IT capabilities in the workplace and leverage the use of technology to provide competitiveness. The management including the CEO, CIO and CFO, play an important role in the process of designing and implementing the IT governance framework (Benaroch & Chernobai, 2017). Additionally, the firms that experience IT operational failures tend to make improvements in IT governance at the board level (Benaroch & Chernobai, 2017). The lack of IT governance not only affects competitiveness, but also different failures, and firms with effective IT governance need to perform better than those without IT governance. It is important for companies to respond to the changing conditions and be agile in an increasingly digitized world.
IT governance through governance models ought to consider the economies of scale when implementing IS systems where there is more emphasis on efficient information governance. Information system stakeholders are institutional actors and it is important for different stakeholders to be aligned with the IT staff and the management during IT implementation. There are different logics that influence the information systems governance (Boonstra, Eseryel & van Offenbeek, 2017). IT management concerns strategic alignment and security where there is value delivery and emphasis on IT governance practices help to improve outcomes. When there is a need to integrate an IT-enabled strategy it is important to take into account the organizational factors that affect IT governance such as institutional logics as the IT logics influence the success of the integration and implementation process.
Business-IT alignment capabilities of organizations and strategies affect the firm performance and ability to leverage IT to enhance competitiveness. Enhancing the IT governance capabilities and the IT based synergies, are important to improve the IT governance practices and to get value from investment in IT.
