RIM (Research in Motion) is a company which started small but today twenty five years after its inception it has grown to become one of the leading global designers, markers and manufacturers of applications and solutions for the mobile phone market. RIM through integrating and developing services, software and hardware has managed to come up with quality products that have won numerous awards such as BlackBerry platform, radio modems, BackBerry hand held and licensing agreement. Research in Motion is a company that was founded in 1984 by engineering students such as Mike Lazaridis from the University of Waterloo and Douglas Fregin from the University of Windsor. In 1988 RIM become the pioneering company in development of data technology in Canada and the entire North America, and was also the first corporation to develop telecommunication products for Mobitex. In 1990 RIM was the first company to introduce DigiSync reader into the market, while in 1991 the company introduced MPC (Mobitex Protocol Converter) (Koplyay, 2003, p. 5).
During the nineties the company came up with a series of technologies that changed the telecommunication industry. In 1993 RIM invented RIMGate, in 1994 the company introduced MPT (mobile point of sale terminal), while in 2000 the company introduced BlackBerry which could support voice and data. The company in 2003 also entered into cooperation with other companies which saw the introduction of BlackBerry licensing program. In the subsequent years the company continued to develop various technologies including the famous BlackBerry technology which by 2004 had more than two million subscribers world wide (Koplyay, 2003, p. 6).
