Part 1: Observation

Content Area: History
Description of Learning Activity: Describe A to z. In this learning activity, the teacher assigns each student a letter and asks them to think of something that starts with the letter based on what they have already learned in class.

Describe the class size, student demographics, available instructional tools/technology, seating arrangements, and class time

The class consisted of 30 students. The ratio of girls to boys was 2:3. There were more white students in the class especially in the male gender. Other racial backgrounds included Hispanic, African American and one native American. There were various instructional tools available in the class including a globe, a projector, whiteboard markers, and history text books for each student. The students were seated independently from each other. The class started at 2 pm and ended at 4 pm.

Once the students had filled out all the questions, she pointed to students at random to give their answers to certain questions. This way, she could assess her class’ general understanding of the events taught in the previous class.
For formative assessment, the teacher would engage each student in a dialogue of oral questions about the letter assigned to them. This allowed the teacher to gauge her students while also remind them of events they had forgotten.
