For this assignment you must write a paper (6-8 pages) on a member of the United States House of Representatives. On October 311 will collect your papers. The paper must be in a folder along with copies of at least three of the sources you used for your paper. For example, if you use Open Secrets as a reference in the paper, you could include a printout from the database with the information you used for this project.
There are several additional requirements for the paper. You must address each of the following items:
1) A brief biographical sketch of the member. Discuss their congressional careers (how long have they been in office, their professional background, where are they originally from, level of education, family background). This section is due September 14. It must be typed or it will not be accepted. You must also include in-text bibliographic references.
2) A discussion of their constituency. Please be sure to provide an overview of the state, the district, the people, and the local economy.
3) A discussion of the congressperson’s committee assignments, and the issues they focus most heavily upon.
4) You must also incorporate their interest group from the 2016 election cycle. Please select an interest group that focuses on an issue the candidate advocates or opposes.
Issues such as tax reform, immigration or abortion are suggested areas to consider, but feel free to look at other relevant issues.
5) Information on your member and their 2014 and 2016 campaigns must also be included in this paper. Who were their challengers? Have they faced challenging electoral situations? I suggest you examine local newspaper articles on the election for more information.
6) I would like you to select one piece of legislation they have sponsored (or cosponsored). Briefly describe the legislation and how far it has gotten in the House. Please explain why the member has an interest in this legislation.
7) Finally, you must look at the representative’s campaign contributions. Where has the majority of their funding come from? You might consider highlighting major donors in one or two categories. The legislature is one branch of the government in the United States is known as Congress. The Congress is a bicameral legislative branch of the federal government is a bicameral that is made up of two chambers; Senate and House of Representatives. Members of the Congress normally meet in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. It is important to remember that members of these two houses are normally being chosen through elections; however, a vacancy in the Senate may be filled through the appointment of the governors. It is also important to remember that Congress is made up of 535 members who are allowed to vote; which consists of 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 senators (Clinton et al., 2012).
This paper will be discussing one of the greatest members of the Congress in the United States and he is called Joe Barton.
Description of the Texas’s 6TH Congressional District, the People and the Economy
The Texas’s Sixth Street in the United States, serves in an area that consists of four counties located to the south of the Dallas or Fort Worth area and also the southeast corner of the Terrant County. According to the census of the year 2000, the sixth district was representing 651,620 people. The Sixth District has been represented by Joe Barton since 1985 in the Congress. This district covers both Ellis and Navarro counties and also the part of Tarrant. The people of the Sixth District and by extension the state of Texas are very hard working and this makes it the second largest economy in the entire United States. The Gross Domestic Product of Texas is currently standing at $1.616 trillion in the year 2016. According to the statistics that was released in the year 2015, it was found out that six out of the top fifty companies in Texas. The gross income of Texas has been approximated to be more than $264.7 billion annually from exports alone. It is important to remember that since the year 2014, Texas has led in the tax revenue for thirteen years in a row (Bailey & Crawford, 2010).
The Role of Joe Barton as a Member of the Congress Committee
Since 1984, when Joe Barton was elected as a Congressman representing the Sixth District of Texas, he has been serving in the House committee of Energy and Commerce. In the year 2004, he was lucky to have been elected to be the chairman of Energy & Commerce, which is the longest standing committee in the house. It has been argued that Energy & Commerce committee is the widest non-tax oriented jurisdiction as compared to any other congressional committee. This is the principal congress committee when it comes to the matters that are related to energy, public health, commerce, as well as the market place interests. Currently, Barton is the senior most members of Republicans in the House, and is serving as the Vice Chairman of the entire Energy and Commerce Committee. In this 115th Congress, Joe Barton has been serving as the Dean of Delegation from Texas, and as a matter of facts he is the ninth senior member of the house.
