In the detailed case study of the company mentioned, it is apparent that the organization achieved its success in different ventures. However, the organization lacked the capacity to manage some of its projects. In other words, the organization’s critical projects were neglected, an aspect that resulted in the company going over its reinstated budget and missing its opportunities. D.D. Williamson consequently experienced a breakdown in its communication approach, thus blinded the organization in establishing some of the projects that required more attention. The organization initiated an investigative approach that took close to three years upon which the leadership team realized that the company lacked a functional system aimed at marketing the organization’s important projects. According to Souza, Carneiro, & Bandeira-de-Mello (2015), D.D. Williamson also failed in initiating an effective project management team that would have established the organization’s scope of projects, the costs of the projects, and the execution of the project process from the time of schedule to completion (pp.845).
On the other hand, it is essential to establish that D.D. Williamson would have taken opportunity through the development of a well-rounded project group/team that would have been capacitated with the responsibility of managing the company’s projects independently. Alternatively, each of these teams would have managed the company’s projects in response to their urgency, practical details, time, and costs. The company would have resorted into a selective process aimed at identifying leader’s who have the capacity to manage the projects, with this expected to open effective communicational approaches. Spieth & Lerch, (2014), details that effective communicational approaches would have played a significant role in helping the group’s and teams to engage, inspire one another, build trust, and inspire the employee’s and leader’s towards achieving the goals of projects upon the specified time and budget (pp.499). In this case, the goal of efficient communication would have been an ingredient in helping the teams to address their issues, thus ensuring that the organization avoids the delays of its projects.
Recommendations of Improving the Prioritization Process
As one of the consultants at D.D. Williamson, there are several recommendation’s that can be made in order to enable the organization improve its prioritization process. First and foremost, it is imperative to establish that close to 70% of organizations fail in the process of project prioritization. As detailed in the case study, this remains one of the challenges that D.D. Williamson faced (Spieth & Lerch, 2014).
