Assignment 1: Presentation of Research Article Name: Lecturer: Course: February 26, 2012 Presentation of Research Article The research article focuses on relationships in society based on the social cognitive theory. It particularly addresses the adolescents and states that relationships are important to them. It tends to explain how relationships in the society begin, happen and end. In discussing the social cognitive theory the writer explains social relationships and the development of the brain. The development of the brain such as the prefrontal, parietal and superior temporary cortex is clearly explained with regard to the development of social cognition. It states that the development of adolescents is poorly understood. The article is systematic and builds on first explaining the development of the childhood stage and continues till adulthood. To address the thesis of the research the authors describe behavioral and neuroimaging studies that are specific to adolescences. In addition data is presented to present the emotional perspective development during the adolescence stage. As explained in the results where 112 participants aged 8 – 36 are interviewed; they indicated that the reaction time in the answering of first person perspective and third person perspective decreased as age aged increase. The aged respondents in the sample tended to a close to zero cluster close (third person perspective = first person perspective) of the scale (Choudhury, et al. 2006). The adolescences on the other hand showed both positive and negative results on the scale. These results were indicative that the possible strategy and efficiency of the brain to take perspectives was dependent to the maturation of the brain and the psychosocial development during the adolescence stage. The major points in the article firstly, include the explanation of development the adolescent’s brain. It is based on recent studies that indicate that there is significant growth in the human brain during adolescence. In the article they quote that the frontal and parietal regions are more pronounce and prolonged during this stage. In describing various parts such as the grey matter and superior temporary sulcus we understand that the article is well based on scientific facts and figures. Secondly, is the change in cognition; that include the development of the executive function is observed. The article outlines numerous studies done on this area and the various parts involved; through the quotes of other scientists one understands how the different part of the brain are link to social cognition.
