Marijuana is a psychoactive drug from the sativa plant with a wide range of uses ranging from medicinal to recreational and spiritual purposes. The main psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives a user the feeling of “high” or “stoned” is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It can be used by smoking, within food or vaporizing. April twentieth (4/20) is recognized worldwide as “stoners day”.
In Canada, the use of marijuana for medicinal and recreational purposes is legal. Medicinal use was legalized nationally on 30th June 2001. Canada become the second nation after Uruguay to legalize marijuana use for recreational purposes after the liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau passed the Cannabis Act (bill c-45) with a view of establishing rules on consumption, production and distribution. The law came into effect on 17th Oct 2018 and set out to strengthen cannabis taxation while also establishing a legal framework on matters marijuana particularly those dealing with penalties for sale of cannabis to minors.
The legislation set to regulate sale times, age of users, home production and advertising. The age of user was set at 18 years of age but most provinces put the minimum age at 19, same as the legal drinking age. Households could grow up to 4 cannabis plants although this was challenged by Quebec and Manitoba. Advertising restrictions were placed on marijuana companies like; no TV commercials, magazines or billboard ads. Additionally, they were prohibited from sponsoring people or sporting events. Such companies have taken to using social media influencers and celebrities like Trailer Park Boys actors and Snoop Dogg to promote their wares. Provinces were allowed to decide procedures for retail sales while retaining the option of online sales. Adults were allowed to possess not more than 30 grams of marijuana in public.
The marijuana debate has existed long before legalization with various pros and cons advanced. Those in favor have argued that its legalization would deal a big blow to the black market while increasing tax revenue which would in turn lead to economic development. It has also been theorized to create jobs, reduce the amount spend on enforcement of anti-cannabis law and safeguarding consumer safety.
