Cultural studies explore daily life including the study community’s culture. It demonstrates to scholars how they make sense of contemporary culture as viewers, readers, producers or consumers, with respect to their identities and communities. Moreover, it offers an opportunity to assess how to various cultural practices convey different meanings? On the other hand, cultural studies assist learners to recognize the value of the research culture and hence, they can compare it with another culture or even their culture. After that brief summary of the paybacks of studying a culture of another community let’s shift our focus to the culture of Pakistan. At this point I want to acknowledge the contribution of my interviewee who was the primary source of information in this essay is Ashiq Rahim, a Pakistani who came to the United States six years ago with the aim of providing a better life for his family.
Brief Introduction to Pakistan
Despite the fact that its official name is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, most people refer to it as Pakistan (Chak, 2015). It was part of the British colonies and it became independent in 1947 (Belokrenickij et al., 2013). Approximately 95% of Pakistanis are Muslim. The other minority religions that exist in Pakistan are Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus. Even though the modern Pakistan is about sixty years old, it has tribal populations and regional areas whose history dates back lots of centuries. It is located in South Asia and covers approximately 379,815 square kilometers in area. It borders Iran to west, Kashmir, and Jammu to the northeast, Afghanistan to the northwest and India to the east (Long, 2015). All of the Pakistan is landlocked except the southern portion, which borders the Arabian Sea. Pakistan’s population is projected to be 135 million people with about 30% of them living in urban centers.
What is the linguistic affiliation for Pakistan?
Pakistanis use a number of languages which include Urdu, Pushto, Baluchi, Sindhi, Punjabi, and English (Belokrenickij et al., 2013). However, Rahim informed this interview that Urdu is the official language of Pakistan. As the official language, it serves as the medium of communication between all regions of Pakistan. Urdu is closely connected to Hindu, except for the fact that it is written in extended Arabic alphabet, a writing style different from the Devanagari (Rahim, 2017). It also borrows words from Turkish, Persian and Arabic. English is considered as the lingua franca of the elite Pakistani. It is also common in the government ministries. The other languages listed above are spoken by individual communities and individuals who are often exposed to these languages.
What is the Pakistanis’ religion?
Muslims form approximately 95% of the total population in Pakistan; hence, making Pakistan one of the world’s major Islamic states.
