Homeland Security and Homeland Defense
Despite the numerous works that homeland security has done for the United States, there has been a failure to develop a specific definition that can define this concept. However, one can focus on the fact that homeland security encompasses the national effort to fight against and prevent terrorism by reducing the vulnerability of the domestic communities to terrorism while ensuring recovery from the various attacks, disasters, and many of the other emergencies that may occur. Homeland security activities are conducted by the federal, state, local and tribal governments that come together through several agencies and departments to fight terrorism and other various criminal activities (Kahan, 2013). The president directs homeland defense, protecting the United States' domestic population, sovereignty, critical infrastructures, and territory against external aggressions and threats. According to the homeland defense, external threats involve any action outside the boundaries of the United States or the homeland. The activities conducted under homeland defense are run and controlled by the Department of Defense, which supports the United States government and international partners (Borek, 2022).
Primary Mission Tasks, Responsibilities, and Operations
The mission of homeland security is to protect the Americans, the critical infrastructures, and the critical resources from terrorists' attacks and prevent or disrupt the terrorist attacks and also ensure recovery and response to the attacks. The different operations and activities of homeland security include defending people against catastrophic events, preparing and responding to emergencies, protecting the critical infrastructures and critical assets of the United States, securing the border and transport, and intelligence (Reese, 2013). As identified earlier, all the various activities and operations are carried out and funded by the federal, state, and local government agencies and departments and sometimes by international organizations. It should be noted that homeland defense is a mission of the department of defense that focuses on protecting the homeland from external threats and aggression. Homeland defense is a military mission to protect the United States from external threats and aggressions. The homeland defense mission is to provide different lifesaving capabilities to the people of the United States in the event of man-made national emergencies or natural emergencies. Homeland defense is responsible for assisting the government in providing protection and safeguarding the local and state communities and also responding to the various emergency moments during the most significant times of need (Borek, 2022).
