Introduction
With increased emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from burning fossil fuels releasing carbon, global warming is a worldwide issue that has gained growing importance. While scientists have presented overwhelming evidence of climate change, the public is often polarized over the critical questions about anthropogenic contributions to global warming (Cook, 2019). Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels are the leading cause of global warming, leading to a greenhouse effect and the rising temperature of the planet. According to Ruddiman (2005), over the past century, human activities have continued to contribute to the warming effect on the earth’s climate. With the advent of coal-burning factories and power plants, industrial societies began releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This was exacerbated by the invention of the diesel engine that added to such emissions. This scenario describes the trend in the rise of the earth’s temperature. The dangers of global warming are that it brings about environmental effects, which may bring disastrous consequences such as endangering the survival of life on earth. This research explores the effects on the effect on the environment on global warming, including flooding from rivers and lakes, droughts, threatening plant and animal species, the creation of environmentally displaced persons, and destruction of the food chain and economic resources.
Global warming has caused extreme weather events such as heavy rains referred to as El Nino. According to Cai et al (2014), El Nino events are characterized by anomalous warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The events are also characterized by marked eastward extension of the warm pool in the Western Pacific that resulted in the development of atmospheric convection hence a huge rainfall. The phenomena are further described to have severely disrupted global weather patterns affecting the ecosystems, agriculture, tropical cyclones, drought, bushfires, floods, and other extreme weather events worldwide. The most notable events are "the 1982/83 extreme El Nino" and the 1997/98 episode commonly known as "the climate event of the twentieth century (Cai et al., 2014)." In particular, El Nino disrupted the global climatic patterns and had a significant impact on agriculture, ecosystems, bushfires, droughts, tropical cyclones, floods, and several global weather events. It is projected that extreme El Nino events could greatly pose immense socio-economic impacts worldwide. Cai et al (2014) present a climatic model that predicts that the occurrences are bound to double in the future due to surface warming particularly over the eastern equatorial Pacific. Cai et al (2014) observe that along this region, these events are occurring at a faster rate compared to the surrounding oceanic waters, which further facilitates the frequency of atmospheric convection. The changes to the environment and global climatic patterns from global warming are disastrous and international efforts are critical in preventing further effects.
