Introduction
African women have played a significant role in migration across the continent and beyond. Migration is a vital aspect of African societies, and women have been at the forefront of this movement, either voluntarily or involuntarily. Women migrate for various reasons, such as education, employment, marriage, or to escape conflicts or disasters. However, African women face unique challenges during migration, including cultural norms, gender roles, and socioeconomic factors (Coquery-Vidrovitch, 2018). In many African societies, women are traditionally assigned specific roles and responsibilities, restricting their mobility and independence. Women are expected to marry, bear children, and care for their families. Women migrants also face significant socioeconomic challenges, poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education and healthcare. These factors can limit women’s opportunities for advancement and expose them to exploitation and abuse. Moreover, cultural dynamics also affect African women’s roles in migration (Adesina, 2007). Cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriage, and gender-based violence (GBV) profoundly impact women’s migration experiences.

African women migrate for various reasons, including seeking better economic opportunities, education, family reunification, and asylum from conflict or persecution. African women play various roles in international migration, influenced by several factors, including cultural and gender norms. Migration can offer opportunities for social mobility but also result in social death, where women lose their social and cultural connections and are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse (Kihato, 2013). Migration patterns and dynamics differ by region and country, and these variations are due to economic, social, and political factors. Many African women also facilitate migration by recruiting migrants or supporting other migrants. They may also serve as intermediaries between migrants and host communities, helping newcomers to navigate the challenges of settling in a new country.
In many African societies, women are responsible for the well-being of their families and often migrate in search of better economic opportunities to support their households. They may also migrate for family reunification or to escape poverty, war, or persecution in their home countries. However, the decision to migrate is often influenced by cultural and gender norms that may limit or facilitate women’s mobility. For instance, in some societies, women are expected to prioritize their family responsibilities over their aspirations, which may discourage them from seeking better opportunities abroad.
