Improving Patient Safety
Patient safety is a critical measure undertaken in all healthcare facilities. Adequate staffing is one of the evidence-based solutions to ensure patients receive quality care. Healthcare facilities with adequate nursing staff are likely to experience a lower rate of inpatient mortality. (Hodgson, Morgan & Peterson, 2016). Appropriate patient-staff ratio is associated with quality care. Evidence-Based health care practices use a multidisciplinary approach in care delivery. Patient research focuses on identifying patient safety issues and developing the new practice that will improve quality and patient safety (Hodgson, Morgan & Peterson, 2016).
Evidence-based practice is best practices that help us put into practice what is learned from research, to improve the care process. Implementing ratio safety practices require strategies that address the complexity of the systems of association of individual, practitioner, changing the healthcare culture to be an evidence-based safety practice environment (Evans et al., 2012).
My PICOT statement: patients admitted to acute care units (P), how do better staff ratios and appropriate beside reporting (I) compared to poor staff ratio and irregular bedside reporting (C) improved patient safety (O) during hospitalization (T).
Good staffing ration and patient safety
Staff ratio influence patient health outcomes, recurrent admission is one of the key indicators of poor staffing ratio. Nurses' role in the care process has a greater impact on patients' health, that is why research studies focus on nursing practice to understand the association between adequate nursing staff and patient health outcomes (Hodgson, Morgan & Peterson, 2016). Research studies advocate for good staffing ratio to improve bedside reporting through a multidisciplinary approach to make the practice a routine. Appropriate nursing staff prevents patients from the experiencing adverse situation like fall when reaching out to call buttons (Hodgson, Morgan & Peterson, 2016).
To understand the link between appropriate staffing ratio and patient health outcomes, the paper present a review about staffing levels and quality care. Evidence-based practices that have been documented revolve around conditions impacting on nursing staff, including the work environment and how they relate to patient health outcomes (Evans et al., 2012). Much emphasis and recommendation have been placed on using a multidisciplinary approach to care. However, evidence best practices related to shift report and good staffing ratios to improve patient levels of satisfaction are limited. Research studies that have documented best practices of adequate staffing ratios reveal the practice has been effective in minimizing readmission rates and reducing inpatient mortality (Aiken et al., 2011).
Most research studies on adequate staffing combined with appropriate bedside reporting have documented up to 90 percent patient satisfaction score (Aiken et al., 2011). Evidence-based practice proves that appropriate nursing staff ration combined with bedside reporting; improve patient health outcomes (Aiken et al., 2011). Monitoring patient...
