A review paper entails the synthesis of existing literature on a topic of interest. This means that you must do a thorough literature review on your topic, using search engines including PubMED, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS (all accessed through the Ryerson library). If you do not know what a review paper is, please speak with your professor and use your resources at the library. 

 

The number of articles you site will depend on how much literature exists on your topic. Therefore, there is no limit to the number of scholarly references you choose to cite. However, for an 8-10 page paper, about 10-20 references are recommended for the review section (you will likely include more references in the introduction and discussion sections).

 

You may cite articles that are relatively old (e.g., 1990s) if it is pertinent to your topic (e.g., discussing the first study to publish on your topic; a ground-breaking study on your topic; discussing the stress response system as published by Sapolsky et al., 1996). However, you will generally want to focus on more recent publications when it come to supporting the link between stress and your outcome of interest (e.g., last 10 years).

 

Instructions and guidelines:

1. Talk to your professor about your topic first to ensure appropriateness for this research paper. Please do so by March 8th at the latest (to give you at least a month to then complete the paper).

 

2. Use APA formatting – you can find the manual for APA writing in the library or online. This is very important for the structure of your document. You will lose marks by not following APA formatting (up to 3 marks on a total of 20).

 

3. Your document must be 8-10 pages, double-spaced. This does not include the cover page or references. Do not exceed 10 pages of text – I will stop reading after 10 pages.

 

4. Make sure to take the time to do a literature search on your topic. You are required to research empirical reports that pertain to your topic. Do not cite review articles as this will possibly lead to conceptual plagiarism. In order to write a proper review paper, your references must be based on empirical reports (i.e., articles that report data from a research study). Do not use your textbook as a reference. Do not use popular websites (other than Stats Canada) as a reference.

 

5. The exact formatting of the review is left up to you. You can discuss one study per paragraph or include several studies in one paragraph/subsection. However, please ensure that for each study you describe the purpose/overview of the study, the general methods, the most important/relevant results, and the meaning/implication of the results.

 

6. When introducing your topic, let the reader know WHY it is an important topic (e.g. how many people suffer? What are the costs to society?). This helps grab the reader’s attention and orient them to the topic.

 

7. Try to clump relevant topics together. E.g., if you are discussing the physiological and psychological consequences of work stress, discuss the psychological stress studies together, and the physiological stress studies together. Section subheadings are also helpful for flow and clarity.

 

8. Make sure to include the following: introduction/description of the behavior/health outcome/ailment of interest (e.g., depression); discussion of stress physiology; linking stress and the health outcome of interest; presenting scientific evidence to support this relationship; future directions that research may want to take, or practical/clinical/medical implications. You will lose marks if you do not discuss stress physiology as the underlying mechanism relating stress to your outcome of interest.
