Portrayals of mental health issues in the media are acknowledged as being very powerful in shaping the public’s views towards mental health. This assignment is designed to use your newfound knowledge of mental illness to turn a keen eye to its portrayals in our popular culture.
First, collect examples of current media that depict and/or deal with mental illness. This could be newspaper and magazine articles, or relevant videotapes of talk shows, television programs and/or films. DO NOT use blogs, vlogs or youtube examples of one person's posted personal story. These should be examples with a broad audience of the general public. Write a 2 - 3 page, 12-point font, double-spaced paper exploring the quality of the coverage, the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the images and/or views presented, the assumptions made about mental illness and the usefulness of the material. Include your perspective on whether or not this material is helpful or harmful in its presentation of mental illness to the public. Please make sure to include your examples (copies of or links to articles, links to or references for tv or film) as a reference. You may choose to focus on one example (one movie or book, for instance) or multiple examples (news clips or newspaper articles).

The mass media has played a major role in influencing the knowledge, behavior, and attitudes of different persons. It is important to clarify ways in which the media notifies and misleads the community concerning issues that pertain mental illness in the society. This is because the understanding of mental disorder is that stigmatization and discrimination of those affected are uncommon. Hence, how the portrait of mental disorder is being portrayed by the mass media and how it is interpreted by the public has a great impact on people’s attitudes and behavior (Rubin, 2014).
The mass media portrays and report different cases of mental illness in such a manner that is incredibly powerful in educating and influencing the public. Mental illness is termed to be an issue involving various diagnoses, treatments, and amenities. The mass media has an influence on public insight concerning those people who are mentally ill. Media professionals such as journalists and scriptwriters work together in making sure imaginary and accurate portrayals of persons with psychological difficulties are captured clearly containing information that is accurate and sensitive to the people viewing. However, the mass media has the capacity to skew reality about mental illness. Mass media shapes the ideas and views of how we understand the people around us. Immediately after the information has been published in the mass media, whether negative or positive, the information is always misunderstood hence resulting in a negative implication about mental illness. Unlike other physical ailments, mental illness is more associated with stigma. Due to continued harsh treatment from the public, those who are mentally ill are directly excluded from the society (Brooks, 2014).
