Application of Learning to Your Target Group
The following questions apply to your course project group for the semester. (This is the group you are leading on your own.) Be sure to provide a statement describing your group. Each answer should be approximately one descriptive paragraph in length. This is to be a 3-4 page paper in APA format addressing the questions below. Utilize at least one cited source.
1. What are the main characteristics of a group during the initial stage?
2. What are some typical behaviors of members of your target group during the first few meetings?
3. What do you as the group leader see as the most important tasks at this time in the group process?
4. Describe an example of effective use of the dyad exercise in your target group. Provide a specific example from the group.
5. A major task of the early phase of a group is to help members define personal goals. What interventions would you make to guide members in creating measurable, concrete goals?
6. Give a specific example of how you will encourage group members to use direct talk.
7. What are the leader's responsibilities in promoting a trusting climate in the group? What norms would be effective to begin establishing at this stage? How would you encourage the norms?
8. What techniques would you use to encourage members to engage in the group process in the initial stages?
9. Role playing is a tool that has been used successfully in groups from many different theoretical perspectives. It is particularly powerful because it is based on the principle that the human mind has the capacity to treat imagined events as if they were real. Role plays and psycho-drama help unite both intellectual and emotional processing of important experiences. Moreover, role plays can be used as a kind of "practice" session in a safe setting for real life challenges. The Corey DVD gives some excellent examples of successful use of role play. Describe how you could use role play within your group. Identify the members by name, the reason for the role play and you will use role play with the members.
10. The Corey video illustrates the work of co-leaders who have developed their skills over many years. They know each other well and perform well as a team although they have very different personal styles. Most writers about therapeutic groups agree that co-leadership is best practice, but co-leadership does have its difficulties. If a disagreement occurred between you and your co-leader during a group session, how would you handle it and why would you handle it that specific way. Utilize cited work to justify your answer.
Reflection Question: Briefly summarize what you have learned from this module that you will apply to your own group work. What have you learned about the functioning of peer supervision groups from participating in your online group? In this online setting, what actions on the part of the instructor or fellow students encourage you to participate? What inhibits your participation (other than such practical considerations as lack of time)? If you were a participant in a therapeutic group such as the one in the video or the one you are leading or planning to lead, what would help you to feel comfortable enough to speak about yourself?
Pay particular attention to how you are personally affected by the Corey DVD as well as any similarities/differences you may see in the Corey DVD to your own peer support group.

In the initial stage of the peer group discussions members behave in different characters. Discomfort and self-alert are some of the behaviors that members feel at the initial stage of a group meeting. This part is really encouraged while in the group. A member of the group suggested being feeling as though he does not belong in the group. Categorization is the other behavior I witnessed in the group where members introduce themselves with a role to the others example; the silent one.
New members of a group portray different behaviors when exposed or put in a group. Some of the behaviors include; being observers other than participating actively. This is exemplified when a member said that she does not have any problems with herself, therefore, she cannot bring anything in the discussions. Trust also is an issue during the first few meeting as these are strangers and some agreed to find it hard in trusting a new person that they have just met.
The important tasks or an activity for the group at this stage are trying to build a bond or connection especially that of trust for the members. Selecting a co-leader who will help in managing the group and the activities involved. Establishing the roles and objectivities of the team, participation should involve all and any cultural or racial differences should be addressed. Issues arising in the group that may end up causing conflicting or disturbing the peace of the group should be dealt with immediate effect.
A dyad is the most effective form of social in society and it has consisted of two people. The dyad exercise helps in creating member communication because it is easier and efficient to talk to one individual than being the only person talking to a whole group. In my group, individuals had to be paired with one another to discuss the reason as to why they joined the group and to discuss their problems. The exercise was a success as the dyad teams familiarized themselves with one another.
