How Fire Arms affect our hearing ability
Fire arms affect our hearing ability negatively due to the loud noise they produced when fired. These results to what we refer to as noise- induced hearing loss. It is induced by sounds that are too loud or loud sounds that often last too long. Some very sensitive structures such as the hair cells are small sensory cells that convert the sound waves to electrical signals that travel, through the auditory nerve, to the brain. Once these hair cells are damaged they cannot grow back (Kale 1992).
The unit used to measure sound is decibels. On this decibel scale, an increase of 5 decibels means that the sound is 5 times more intense, louder or powerful. To human ears it sounds twice as loud. So that we can relate how loud is loud, the humming of a refrigerator is 45 decibels while a normal conversation ranges at about 60 decibels and that from very heavy city traffic can be up to 85 decibels. Sources that emit sounds 120 to 150 decibels cause noise induced hearing loss, this is such as firearms. Firearms expose their users to an intense impulse sound of above 120 decibels. . For instance a big bore rifle and pistols can produce up to 175db of noise while small 22 caliber rifles produce noise up to around 140db. Also long repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can also cause loss of hearing (Pankiw 2000).
An example of frequent users of firearms is the hunters. Most of them take hunting safety aids for granted, this in the long run results to the damage of their hearing which is especially noted at their old age i.e. in their 70s. This damage occurs when the gun is fired; the gun produces very high or loud decibels which ripple through the air which have instantaneous effects on the hearing ability. The government and studies from various universities have done research which indicates that many hunters loose a portion of their hearing from a shot fired from a fire arm, just one single shot. So as to avoid this, safety precautions are required to be taken by the hunters, this may be done through staying away from the line of fire of other hunters and use hearing safety devices to hunt as safely as possible.
Our hearing ability can also be affected by firing guns in a place where the sounds can bounce-off, reverberate or echo on walls and other structures. This can resul...
