Research contemporary organizations that are currently responding to a significant change within the industry, such as disruptive technology; state, government, or industry regulations; environmental constraints; judicial or legislative rulings; etc.
Choose one organization from your research that has recently responded to major change, or is currently responding to change. Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) discussing how well the organization is responding to the change dynamics. Include the following:
Describe the organization and the change to which it is responding.
Discuss the degree to which the change has been disruptive and how the organization has responded to the dynamics created by this change.
Evaluate the strategies the organization used in its change plan and determine the level of success the organization experienced with the strategies.
Determine the effect the change had on stakeholders, and to what degree stakeholders have resisted. Assess how well stakeholder resistance was addressed.
Evaluate the overall implications the change had on interdepartmental collaboration.
In your opinion, how well did the leaders of the organization respond and prepare for the change? What worked and what did not work with the strategies they implemented?
What modifications would you suggest the leaders of the organization make in order to better address the change dynamics? What additional strategies would you recommend to assist the organization through this change?

The modern business environment has become increasingly volatile and unpredictable. Various changes have occurred and continue to occur in various industries, prompting different organizations to change. For instance, a crisis such as the September 11 attack led to far-reaching changes, especially in aviation-related organizations. Financial crises have also led to various changes in the finance industry. Other factors that lead to change include disruptive technology, the presence of performance gaps, identification of new opportunities, mergers, and acquisitions, internal and external disruptions, as well as changing legislation. To respond to these changes, organizations must change strategies, organizational culture, as well as an organizational structure. Change is usually a difficult task and faces resistance from various stakeholders. However, owing to the modern business environment, organizations have to undergo various changes to survive. This paper seeks to find out the changes that Microsoft has responded to in the recent past; strategies applied, their successes and failures, as well as recommendations that could help improve the organization’s response to the changes.
Headquartered in Washington, Microsoft is an American multinational corporation that deals with computer software and hardware, social networking services, consumer electronics, video games, cloud computing, among others. Some of the company’s famous products include Windows, Office, Skype, Xbox, and Visual Studio. Its services include LinkedIn, Bing, and several others. The organization was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975. It is divided into various divisions such as Microsoft Garage, Microsoft engineering groups, Microsoft Studios, Microsoft Research, among others. The company has a workforce of over 120,000 employees and registered revenue of $89.95 billion in 2017 (Microsoft, 2017).
From its humble beginnings in 1975 to become the largest software maker in the world, Microsoft has had to make various changes in its structure to keep up with the continually changing environment. On top of making various acquisitions, the company has also had to diversify its products to increase its market share. However, the most significant change and reorganization took place after Satya Nadella became the CEO. The success of Windows Operating System and the various Office products was long-lived and propelled Microsoft to the helm of the industry. However, this was followed by a period of stagnation. The company struggled to create a second act; a product that would ensure continued dominance in the industry. The situation was worsened by internal competition and wars amongst the various business units. This toxic environment choked innovation, and the company was forced to survive on constant refresh cycles of Windows and Office (Pressman, 2018). Windows 8 performed dismally, and the faith of stakeholders in the company started failing. On top of the internal woes, the external environment became more competitive and volatile. Google was gaining dominance online while Apple was dominating the mobile products market.
The Satya Nadella Era
Satya Nadella took over at the helm of Microsoft in February of 2014. His first assignment was to take the giant through a significant restructuring process with the aim of getting rid of internal competition that was hurting the company as well as a complete change of the company’s culture.
