Question 1
The first question about the individual’s weaknesses and strengths is legal to ask because it gives the employer an insight of the individual’s ability to respond to certain scenarios in the workplace. Question two on whether the person is a US citizen is not legal to ask because it’s a sign of discrimination. The question can be made legal by asking about the nationality of the individual and asking them to provide the necessary legal documents to avoid cases of employing an illegal immigrant. Question three on the number of children that they have is not legal because it intrigues a lot on their personal life. The question can be made legal by enquiring about the names of family members working under the same organization. Question four is legal because the person should be able to meet the job requirement which, in this case, is being described by the schedule. Question five is legal because telling the interviewer about oneself is part of credential and experience verification.
Question six is not legal because the individual can lie about their criminal record. The best option is to ask for a certificate of good conduct. Question seven is legal because their weakness is an indication of their future performance. Question eight is not legal because it’s too personal and makes the individual feel like charity work is part of the job requirements. It can be made legal by enquiring whether they are involved in any charity work. Question nine is a direct case question hence legal. Question ten is not legal because it shows discrimination (Hern Jr, Alter,Wills, Snoey & Simon, 2013). It can be made legal by enquiring about their expected salary. Question eleven is not legal because it’s personal and can only be made legal by enquiring about relatives that work in the same organization. Question twelve and fourteen are legal because they display the candidate’s capability to carry out the job. Question thirteen is personal hence not legal. However, it can be made legal by asking about the applicant’s age if it’s part of the job description. The last question can be made legal by asking about their interests.
