Slide 1: Background
The facility is located in Corpus Christi, Texas.
It was formed in 2005 as a faith-based nonprofit organization (Amistad CHC, n.d.).
It was formed to address the rising number of community members lacking:
* a primary care provider
* health insurance
* a place to receive quality and affordable medical care
The center is eligible for federal funding after it’s designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 2005.

FQHC is a designation by the federal government that is assigned to healthcare institutions that serve medically underserved populations.
Amistad Center is a Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) deemed facility.
This means the facility is protected from medical malpractice liability.
The employees and contractors in the facility are immune from medical malpractice lawsuits.
Slide 3: Population Targeted
The health center provides medical services to “people in every stage of the life cycle” (Amistad CHC, n.d.).
The center offers the services to people regardless of their paying ability
However, services are charged on a sliding scale fee depending on income and family size of the patient.
The center thus targets all people in Corpus Christi city.
It is important to note that the community in Corpus Christi is among the underserved populations whose access to healthcare and insurance is limited (Amistad CHC, n.d.).
Slide 4: Conditions/Diseases Targeted
The center provides all services from wellness checkups to prescriptions
As noted in its website the center offers
* Behavioral health: Group and individual psychotherapy, ADHD and medical management, and mood and anxiety disorders treatment
* Women’s health: pelvic examinations, infertility treatment, prenatal and postnatal care, treatment of menopause and polycystic ovarian diseases
* Family Medicine: Immunizations, wellness checks, and referral services
* Dental care: extractions, wellness checks, X-rays, cleanings, and composite fillings
* Pediatrics: Immunizations, well-child checks, sports physicals
Slide 5: Conditions/Disease Checked- Type 2 Diabetes
There’s a dedicated focus on Type 2 diabetes prevention
The center offers education and medical assistance on type 2 diabetes
Members of the community diagnosed with pre-diabetes are offered fun classes.
The classes are free to attend and there is no obligation to sign up.
The program in the facility is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program
Slide 6: Participating Payers
Community healthcare centers are non-profit organizations and rely heavily on grants and contracts
Majority of the healthcare costs are covered by the federal government
Private insurance, as well as self-pay, are among the participating payers, although their contribution is low (Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, 2010).
State and local grants also help cover the costs of the community health care center.
It’s important to note that the targeted population for the center is underserved and therefore significantly uninsured.
