The Effects of Girl-to-girl Bullying
Young children and adolescents, especially in the generation today, succumb to bullying. This refers to the aggressive behaviors of the child to inflict harmful or hurtful events toward the other. It can take several forms, such as verbal, physical, and relational aggression. Studies have shown that the differences in gender norms contribute to the indefinite changes that a child experiences, depending on his or her chosen gender. These experiences can lead to adult aggressive behaviors that may hinder a person’s character development (Hellström & Beckman, 2020).
The aggressive behaviors cause disparities in power. This is especially true for school bullying that has been found out to escalate rapidly and considerably during the past decade, which may be driven in part by the intensification of cyberbullying. The prevalence fluctuates indefinitely due to the differences in risk factors such as appearance, gender preference, social class, race, and financial status (Smith, 2016).
Young girls confront a variety of issues while growing up. Most of these issues are due to facing extreme pressures in society. Almost all, especially teenage girls, regardless of ethnicity and culture, admits to these pressures. Thus, altering their personalities drastically (Labh, Priya, & Gayathri, 2018). Girls tend to express their attitudes and behaviors indirectly, which can take the form of blatant relational aggression, such as spreading fake rumors and gossip. Research suggests that young girls tend to resort to these actions to succeed in close friendships and decrease the risk of rejection from cliques. These occurrences can lead to young girls to strive for social support from other peers or even adults, such as talking to the guidance counselor or other peers to lighten up their situation (Hellström & Beckman, 2020).
The victims of bullying reported to coping strategies that either help them neglect or face the issues head-on. All of these strategies have possible effects in adulthood. Graziano, Bruce, Paul, et al. (2019) revealed that people who suffer from early life stress, such as bullying, are more predisposed to mental health issues such as depression, aggression, and alexithymia. Depression causes withdrawal to society. The worst-case scenario that can result from it is suicidal ideations and, eventually, suicide. Alexithymia, on the other hand, characterizes a person of not having feelings that can be identified physically or verbally (Grynberg, Chang, & Corneille, 2012).
Having mental health issues secondary to bullying is a common occurrence. The pieces of evidence presented have shown its negligible and considerable adverse effects on the person and hence, to the society. These issues must be addressed as early as possible to prevent the deterioration of a person’s character.

These incidences led to the establishment of support and advocacy groups that help these young girls to cope up and to raise awareness of the possible permanent effects of girl-to-girl bullying.
