Saturn: The Planet
Introduction
The “Jewel of our Solar System”, Saturn is the sixth planet relative to the distance of planets from the sun. Currently, scientists consider it as the second-largest planet found within the Solar System. For many years, Saturn is subject to adoration because of its complex, yet beautifully placed rings made of ice and rock. Although Saturn is not the only planet with rings around, it still is the one carrying the title of The Plant with the Most Beautiful Rings in the Entire Solar System.1
History
Luckily for humankind, Saturn is one of the planets easily visible in the night sky, with or without the aid of the telescope. Records suggest that during the prehistoric times, people have already known the existence of Saturn as an astronomic object. However, it is during the period of telescope invention when scientists observed the ring formation found around the planet.2
In the year 1610, Galileo Galilei first discovered the planet using a telescope. During his first observation, he was not able to decipher the structures surrounding Saturn. His first hypothesis involving these surrounding structures are the moons of Saturn located one on each side of the planet. He went to observe the planet for the next four years only to note that the “moons” of Saturn disappears and later on reappears. With this regard, he considered these structures as the “arms” of Saturn.2
Christiaan Huygens gave the correct answer to the question of Galileo Galilei about the “arms” of Saturn. In 1659, he debunked the previously claimed “arms” and mentioned that these structures are the rings of the planet. He successfully concluded this information with the aid of more advanced optics for the telescopes. He also discovered Titan, the moon of Saturn.2
Involving the moons of Saturn, further discoveries rose as Jean-Dominique Cassini saw the other four (4) significant moons of Saturn. These moons are Iapetus, Rhea, Tethys, and Dione. Another breakthrough made by Cassini was the discovery of the Cassini Division. This discovery involves a thin clear space that divides the whole structure of the ring system of the planet into two.2
In the 19th Century, James Edward Keeler said that the ring system of Saturn is not a uniform sheet.2 The ring system comprises of tiny particles accounting for its seemingly homogenous feature. The substances contained in the particles comprising the rings, as well as the interaction of these rings, were subject to different studies by Voyager spacecraft, somewhere between 1980 to 1981.2,3
Further detailed information about Saturn came to existence as the years went by. For example, the composition of the rings is water ice. Also, in 2016, the Cassini spacecraft captured the first image showing a closer look at Saturn. The next exploration to Saturn will commence by 2025.3,4
