Introduction
With the advancements in science and technology, it has become easy for human beings to communicate with each other and to develop good relationships with new people. On a daily basis, they interact with the people living in different parts of the world through social networking websites and online forums (2015). The fact is that people have started showing more interest in online dating than formal relationships. The process of falling in love is different from person and person and depends on the biological characteristics or physical features of people. In general, love is love, and it does not believe in any differences. When it comes to talking about the science behind falling in love, we can notice that certain chemicals such as oxytocin are produced in the human brain, urging them to develop feelings of affection, attraction, and love. It means when an individual falls in love with someone, hormonal changes may take place in his or her body, and they will want to spend most of the time with the desired individual. Thus, there is a science behind every feeling and emotion when someone starts loving another person.
Literature Review
According to Akio Matsumoto, there are a variety of phases of falling in love. The first phase is regarded as lust. The level of estrogen drives it in women and testosterone in men. Lust also exists in other living things especially animals. The purpose of this feeling is to attract each other to develop a physical relationship (Matsumoto, 2017). For example, when a man and a woman develop a physical relationship and spend moments of loneliness with each other, hundreds to thousands of sperms travel from his body to her body, targeting the egg cells. The long tail of a sperm helps it move at a fast speed, and many mitochondria empower this movement. Also, genetic information is passed on, and enzymatic proteins transfer from the sperm to the egg cell.
In 2014, a study was conducted by Colette Leung in which it was clearly mentioned that the scientific or biological reason for falling in love with someone is to have sex with them. In one way or the other, it promotes reproduction and aims to satisfy one’s physical or emotional desires. Specific proteins are stored in the cap of the sperm, and these are known as acrosomes (Leung, 2014). When they reach the right place, acrosomes break down the outer layer of the ovum, which is known as zona pellucida, allowing the haploid nucleus in the sperm cell to join the haploid nucleus in the ovum.
In his article titled Contracts of Love and Affection: Lear, Old Age, and Kingship, William O. Scott talks about another distinctive stage or phase of falling in love (attraction). This feeling is similar to that of having a desire for drugs or alcohol (Scott). When a boy, for example, loves the way a girl carries herself, he gradually attracts toward her and may want to marry her in order to promote the process of reproduction and to raise a family of his own.
