Many of the course learning resources ask you to think about what it means to be a leader. Is it possible there is a new paradigm of leadership emerging?
Aim: the aim of this assignment is for you to clarify and write your personal leadership philosophy.
NOTE: For the purpose of this assignment, a philosophy is defined as a set of principles that underpin the knowledge, values, theory(ies) and attitudes held by you, and that you use to guide your actions, reflections and decisions as a leader. This assignment reflects YOUR personal philosophy and therefore should use “I” statements.
To begin, reflect on what leadership means to you. It may be helpful to review course materials and other scholarly resources as you formulate your philosophy. Search the Athabasca University electronic databases for scholarly papers on the topic of leadership. You are encouraged to move beyond the literature in your own discipline. To support your views, cite at minimum of three peer -reviewed journal articles published within the past five years in your paper.
Structure:
Introduction – follow the APA guidelines for writing an introduction. Your introduction should start with a statement about why YOUR philosophy is important and also include a purpose statement.
Three paragraphs: Each paragraph should explicate one principle of your philosophy (for a total of three principles). The paragraph should explain the principle, how you apply it, how it guides your leadership practice, and how this principle is supported by the leadership literature. The focus of each paragraph is on the principles of your philosophy and not general statements about leadership or leaders.
Conclusion – follow the APA guidelines for writing a conclusion. Your conclusion should summarize the three main points to your philosophy and offer analytical statements about your philosophy.
Reference requirements: Three peer-reviewed papers must be used. These references should support your philosophy and demonstrate how your philosophy is linked to the literature on leadership.
CAUTION: Be sure that you are not summarizing the literature or providing general statements. This literature must be cited in such a way that is supports your philosophical statements.
Length: Maximum four pages
NOTE: Sometimes students slip into writing general statements about leadership. Be certain that each paragraph is about you and your philosophy and describes the values and principles that guide you and your leadership practice.
Assignment 1 will be evaluated for the following:
1. Integration of independent thought with concepts covered in the course; observations/beliefs are need to be explained and supported by the literature.
2. Thoroughness of analysis; multiple aspects of an issue are presented.
3. Presentation of paper is logical and arguments are clearly formulated.
4. Paper is well organized, writing style is scholarly, APA format is followed, and grammar, spelling, sentence structure are correct.

Personal Philosophy on Leadership
United States President Abraham Lincoln once said “Whatever you are, be a good one.”. These words have become famous and applicable to various aspects of a person’s life. Personally, these famous words of President Abraham Lincoln have shaped my philosophy on what a leader should be. I follow a transformational leadership philosophy and I believe this is important because this will shape my attitude and behavior when leading people, as well as a guiding principle that I can always go back to in various situations that I will face as I go along with my journey as a leader. This philosophy focuses on the followers and their improvement as an individual and as part of a larger group or organization (Shaw, et al., 2018). It is important to me to be this specific type of leader because I believe that the ideals that we have towards a project or even the world, cannot be accomplished to its full potential alone no matter how determined or excellent one person may be. The followers and their individual views and principles will play a great role in how the goal can be achieved. With this type of philosophy, I cannot only focus on the process or decision-making alone, but I have to take the whole team and operations into account, providing a holistic approach that will have a positive impact both to the people and the long-term goals of the team. There is a common misconception with this concept being solely focused on the followers, but this is not the case, and, in this concept, there is mutual stimulation also producing growth on my part as an individual and a leader. In this paper, the principles that I will follow and embody to become the leader that I want to be in every situation and challenge that I face will be discussed in detail.
Inspiring Motivation
As a transformational leader, one of the most famous characteristics is being an inspirational motivator (Norman, 2019). This is important in sharing the same views and perspectives towards a goal to my followers. This does not mean that I would inhibit or put limitations on the beliefs and ideas of my followers, but this principle means that my goal or the goal of the organization will be in line with the goals of the people. In this way, all the efforts of the followers and me as a leader would provide an efficient strategy and path toward what the set goals are. This inspiring motivation will also play a big role when my follower is having a hard time or is experiencing confusion.
