Introduction
Does racism still exist in the current world? Does it still have the same impacts or effects as it was 50 years ago? Are people of color still fighting for equal rights as they were 50 years ago? These are but some of the questions that still linger in the hearts of many in this postmodern world. The majority of people disturbed by such issues are those with zeal to attain a racially free world where everyone is viewed as equal regardless of race or status within the society. However, the answer to the questions cannot be straight forward as the issues are because of several elements. This paper seeks to find answers to such queries by providing some critical analysis in considerations of the current situations against the activities that took place in America in1960s, as presented in the film In the Heat of the Night.
State of Civil Rights Movements in 1967 when the film In the Heat of the Night was released
The movie In the Heat of the Night is a movie that was released a couple of decades ago in the United States. The film depicts a lot of events that took place in America during the 1960s where people of color, especially blacks, were unfairly treated to an extent where they felt that keeping quiet and doing nothing about their frustrations could not help. It is during this era that most of the mitigations on racism started to be established. Sidney Poitier, who assumes the character of an African-American police detective in the movie, is depicted as the black person who is trying to fight back against the white people inhuman treatments towards blacks (Smith, 2019). It is no doubt that the film depicts the situation that was taking place in America during the 1960s and some of the developments that had taken place in America before 1967 courtesy of the Civil Rights Movements.
Some pieces of evidence on the can be picked from the Civil Right Movements Timelines that are related to what is happening in the movie In the Heat of the Night include but not limited to the following. First, it is evident from the Civil Rights Timelines that segregation in America's armed services was declared illegal in 1948 (Brunner and Haney, 2017). This realization led to the establishment of non-segregated armed services from the police force to the army and all remaining branches of the authorities. This element is evident in the film In the Heat of the Night in that Virgil Tibbs, a black detective, is seen to be working in collaboration with Bill Gillespie, a white racist police chief in Sparta, Mississippi (Smith, 2019).. The cooperation of these two police officers in the movie indicates that segregation in the police force was a thing of the past in America during 1967 when the film was released.
The other element from the Civil Right Timeline that connects the occurrence in United States of America during 1967 when the film In the Heat of the Night was released is the occurrence of the nonviolent civil disobedience. According to the timeline of the Civil Rights Movement, it is clear that the phrase "black power" became dominance after a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Stokely Carmichael used it in his speech to cal...
