Successful completion of a doctoral dissertation requires significant amounts of independent reading on the research topic. This allows the doctoral learner/researcher to become familiar with the scope of the topic and to identify gaps or tensions within the existing literature on the topic. These gaps and tensions become the source of the dissertation research. In this assignment, you will read and annotate potential sources in your dissertation field of interest. Those demonstrating the most merit to the best of your understanding of the topic at this time should be added to your RefWorks list for potential inclusion in the literature review section of your dissertation.

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
It is strongly recommended that you engage in this activity throughout the duration of your program. You will be adding to this document to begin building a runnnig literature review. You will have five sources in your list by the end of this assignment.
Instructors will be scoring your submission based on the number of unique sources identified in the list submitted.

Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.

The article highlights the importance of developing leadership identity, where the leaders reflect on different aspects of leadership in leadership education. The researchers focused on leadership development going beyond the usual focus on theory and the skills based approaches by highlighting the potential benefits of developing the “meaning, strength, levels, and integration” components of identity. Teachers and leaders can reflect on the meaning of leadership to improve their leadership competence. When developing the leadership identity, the leaders need to integrate diverse experiences in their life, and different leadership experiences are an opportunity to learn. Leaders build concepts of leadership identity and leadership experiences are helpful to understand leader identity development, where the leaders are able to articulate their leader identity. Researches on the leadership theories tend to focus on these theories are useful in enhancing leadership effectiveness, but few research consider the leadership theories when applied practically. The article also focuses on the application of leadership theories focusing on leadership identity development.

The researcher focused on the leadership performance of principals who were high performing and considering different factors that were linked to rating the school constituents for the public school system. Hutton used a Varimax rotation technique for factor analysis with four components to determine the strength of relationship between these components. The four components were personal philosophy and abilities, leadership, student support systems, and the fourth component school-community support and relationships.
