Murphy’s article, “Love and Money- and How They’re Connected,” discusses how a person’s relationship style is directly related to how they approach money. According to psychological, behavioral, and neuroscience findings, the extent to which one is secure and established in a relationship mirrors how one is stable and confident about their finances. Understand this relationship requires one to conduct an in-depth analysis of their relationships, starting with the one with parents.
Kate continues that to understand this attachment; there is a need to consider the attachment theory. The theory argues that every person has an interpersonal attachment style that continues from secure to insecure, and most people tend to lean towards the insecure side. There are three attachment styles. One is the needy people for love who use their money to be loved and appreciated by others. Two are the anxious people in love who tend to go overboard with money, such as paying for meals, lending out large sums that they never get back because they cannot say no. People with avoidant issues in relationships are another category who needs to be self-sufficient by saving a lot and tend to control a situation if they are paying for it.
According to Daniel Crosby, a psychologist and behavioral officer, a person’s upbringing contributes to their behavior with money. Depending on one’s upbringing, money can be a source of protection, safety, control, prestige, power, rejection, or weakness. These associations develop early in life and are difficult to eradicate.
