Coronaviruses have been around forever. They are the second leading cause of common colds, and have rarely caused more serious diseases. The first Coronavirus was isolated in 1937. These viruses can infect both people and animals and are sometimes zoonotic (can be transferred between humans and animals). There have been two coronaviruses that have caused some panic in the past. SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV were both relatively severe respiratory diseases caused by a form of coronavirus. This most recent strain is called the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
Coronavirus is named as such due to its unique shape, as it looks like a halo. This is only seen when the virus is viewed under an electron microscope. Coronavirus is a large family of RNA viruses. Usually, they are a single strand of RNA that is 32 kilobases long. It is one of the largest known RNA virus genomes. They also have the highest frequency of recombination of any other positive stranded RNA virus. This means that these viruses can mutate/change at a very rapid rate, making it potentially dangerous. Due to these added variables, creating a vaccine can be extremely difficult and that is why the news is reporting such delays in progress. These viruses also have a unique replication process. A general summary is that while most RNA viruses contain a single open-reading frame (ORF) to translate into a polyprotein, coronavirus can contain up to 10 ORFs and it follows a two-step replication mechanism. Its replicase (a form of ORF) is twice the size of most other RNA viral genomes.
Right now, a vaccine that was created for SARS is at the Baylor College of Medicine. It was stored because the SARS epidemic did not last long and the vaccine was no longer needed. The creator, Peter Hotez, reached out to a collaborator in China asking if the new coronavirus was similar to SARS. The reply confirmed it, it was 82% identical. Hotez is pushing for funding and clinical trials but other researchers doubt that a vaccine for SARS could be effective for this new strain. There are efforts for vaccines occurring across the World, but the universal verdict is that it is going to take time.
