Writing Instructions

Section 1:  (25 points).  Introduce the topic you have chosen and provide research on the subject.  Be thorough!  This section is a research section!!!  Therefore, you must provide details about the topic (i.e., define it, tell me the prevalence of it, give statistics, describe the dynamics of the topic – for example … the death penalty is a controversial issue …. why? … domestic violence has certain features about it, such as the fact that women often stay with their abusers … why? … some individuals believe women ask to be assaulted … why do they believe that – what are the myths about rape and/or sexual assault?).  Be curious.  You will need to do research in order to complete this section of the assignment and you will need to have at least two reputable sources for this research.

·         This needs to be at least a page and a half

Of note:  If you choose a criminal case in the news, do research on a subject related to the article NOT more information about what happened in the article.  For example, if you have a case about a man who murdered his entire family, research the different types of murder (manslaughter1 & 2, murder, etc) and what the penalties for each are.  Example #2, if your article is about a young lady who had her father killed because of years of abuse, then research abuse.

Section 2: (10 points)  Choose an article on the topic you have selected and write a thorough summary of that article.  The easiest way to find an article is to search The New York Times, Baltimore Sun, or other reputable newspapers for your topic.  Locate a story about people experiencing your issue.  Having an actual story will make your job so much easier!

·         This needs to be at least 3/4ths of a page

Section 3:  (50 points)  Analyze the article through a sociological lens.  Use a variety of the concepts and theories we have discussed this semester. Provide examples from the article that illustrate what each concept you use means.  You will need to elaborate so the “illustration” is a clear example of the concept’s definition; meaning you must justify your answers.  You also need to include definitions, but do not just repeat definitions and do nothing else

·         Spend as many pages as you need on this, but be sure you are being thorough.  This section is worth 50 points so take as many pages as you need to do a good job.  Of note, one page is not going to be enough.

Section 4:  (10 points).  Write a paragraph about your thoughts, feelings, and judgments on the topic and/or article – your social reality.  This should be in first person (i.e., I feel … this make me angry … I am horrified by …).

·         This should be at least 3/4ths of a page

Section 5:  (5 points).  Closing paragraph.  You can tell me what you learned or give a summary, but find a proper way to close your paper.

Police Brutality in the United States
Introduction
In recent years, police killings have remained steady in the United States, with the Washington Post (2020) recording approximately 1000 deaths resulting from police shooting yearly in the last five years. On the contrary, in a span of 15 years between 2005 and mid-2019, only 104 police officers had been arrested with accusations of using excessive force. Thirty-five of the arrested 104 were convicted for such crimes, with 15 pleadings guilty for the accusation while 20 were convicted by jury trial (Stinson and Wenzlaff, 2019). However, the worrying aspect about the trend is that most police killings in the united states have been against non-whites, with black men accounting for most of the numbers. Therefore, police shooting has become the leading cause of death among young men in the United States (Edwards, Lee, and Esposito, 2019). One in every 1000 young black men aged between 20 to 35 years is afraid of being killed by police.
The occurrences are controversial because it indicates brutality against the black race and, worst of all, most of the killings have been towards helpless unarmed black people, including young children. The most notable case was a recent one that took place early this year, where the victim George Floyd, a helpless 46-year-old black man, was killed by a police officer who applied excessive force while arresting him. Video footage capturing the event had the man pleading to the officers that he could not breathe by they ignored him only to realize the seriousness of the man's cry after the mad had died. The other police brutality incident was that of a young boy, Michael Brown Jr., who, despite raising his hand in surrender, was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
While all this is happening, the government has been doing very little to change this narrative. For instance, Trump's regime has even made matters worse as it has played public relations games with the black lives matter protest and stagnated the few efforts made by the previous regime. During his reign, President Obama made some efforts to control the police's power to control the situations. Key among President Obama's efforts, which have so far been neglected by the Trump regime, include an executive order to curtail local departments from procuring some military-grade equipment. President Obama also commissioned a 21st-century policing task force, which advocated shifting American law enforcement culture from warrior to guardian.
Article on the Topic
An article by Oliver Laughland published on 4th June 2020 in The Guardian newspaper is relevant to police brutality against black people in the United States. The article titled US police have a history of violence against black people. Will it Ever Stop? Points out several incidents of police killings in the United States. The article also highlighted how little had been done to ensure that justice is served to the victims, thanks to several obstacles that prevent justice from being served. The article also highlights what the current and the previous regimes have done about the situation (Laughland, 2020).
The article provides insights into Pr...
