A DISCUSSION ON RADIOLOGY AS A HEALTH CARE PROFESSION Name Institution Instructor Date of Submission Abstract While we appreciate the work of health care professionals as they seek to promote hygiene and cure patients after detecting diseases, it is often important to note that medicine has come a long way and over the years developed to what it is today through several refinements that have been made possible through use of technology (Wilson & Brownstein, 2009). From the need to prevent a disease and the drive to cure it there has always been a need for continuous research for better ways of management of diseases. Radiology is one such profession that has come to the fore and has proven effective in handling several diseases and forms of infection. Our understanding of the history and nature of the profession shall make understand the impact it has made in the world today. Introduction Through the use of various investigative techniques, radiologists focus on detection of diseases and their work is instrumental in uncovering the nature of diseases and can therefore help in coming up with an early diagnosis that is accurate. This raises the prospects of treatment. Cancer, a growing epidemic is one of the diseases that can be cured enough if detected in the early stages. Radiology also plays a central role in identification of the source of a disease and therefore further increasing the chances of coming up with an effective solution that shall help stop further spreading of the infection. History and Development of Radiology Ever since the discovery of the X-Ray technology in 1895 there have been great strides in the field of radiology. Many scientists have over the years put considerable efforts in understanding the nature of body tissues through imaging studies such as ultrasound. Radiology physician assistants were first formally trained in the 1970s (Linton, 2013). After several progressive developments made by institutions such as the US Department of Defense, The American Society of Radiologic Psychologists awarded several universities the necessary grants needed to develop certification programs for Radiology assistants in 2003. However, it is not until 2005 when the field of radiology got its first graduates. Education Training and Certification As aforementioned, there are several universities now offering a degree course on radiology in light of the developments in research and the relevant educational curriculum development. Some offer the training in modules for those medical professionals who already have a background in medicine or related field but for whatever reason would like to have the knowledge on radiology (Rosenblatt, et al. 2012).
