Case Part I: Geologic History of Earth
The first part of this assignment requires that you consider the history of extinction on our planet as explained in the three tutorials you viewed on the Home page. From the UCMP Geologic Time exercises on the Home page, answer the following questions using full sentences in paragraph form:
When you clicked on the “bookmarks,” which events were listed and in what order (there were six)?
In the Geologic Time Scale section, images of which organisms are included in the Archaean time period?
Which three periods of time are described as “Eras”? List the representative organisms included in the photos that appear when you click on each Era.

Case Part II: Global Climate Change
Scientists have concerns that human activities are changing our environment at rapid rates that could result in a sixth mass extinction. Let’s examine the evidence:
Review this tutorial on the carbon cycle and greenhouse gases.
What were listed as human activities related to greenhouse gas production? What does this do to the rate at which carbon is returned to the atmosphere?
Opponents of the theory of global climate change propose that extinctions are a normal part of our planet’s history and that the temperature of the planet has also historically fluctuated. View this graph demonstrating the rate of greenhouse gas accumulation over the last two thousand years. When do the greenhouse gas emissions drastically increase? Do a Google search using “Industrial Revolution” as your search term. What connections can you make between the Industrial Revolution and this graph?
Next use this Greenhouse Gas simulation. Begin by clicking on the “Simulation Controls” in the upper left-hand corner. Set the greenhouse gas level to the highest, check the boxes “view labels” and “view a possible consequence.”
What consequence is shown? What effect could this consequence have on animal and plant populations in that region? How much reduction in greenhouse gases is necessary to reduce the extent of this consequence?
When you click on the “Graph” menu, what is the relationship between percent (%) of greenhouse gases and temperature? What is the relationship between temperature and ice? Which mass extinction from the Natural History Museum website in Part I does this remind you of?
Part III: Drawing Conclusions
Now provide a Conclusion paragraph that explains what conclusions you can make for yourself based on the evidence provided and what you now know about the geologic time scale of the history of the Earth. What questions are still left unanswered for you?

Over the more than 4 billion years ago since the formation of the world, the world has evolved a lot. From the first organisms to the earliest mass extinctions, there is much earth history.
Part 1
Bookmarks Events
Using the UCMP website, I found six events when clicking bookmarks. The events are in pictures showcasing major events on the earth since its formation. The events include the formation of the universe and that of the moon 4.6 billion years ago, the earliest life, early land plants, the largest mass extinction, the extinction of dinosaurs and the first early hominid "Lucy" respectively.
Images of Organisms in the Archean Period
The Archean period commonly referred to as the ancient or original period was when the first single cell organisms including bacteria started evolving. Organisms listed in the Geologic Time Scale for the Archean period include the cyanobacteria and stromatolite, (UCMP, 2014).
Eras and their organism
The Geologic Time Scale has listed the Paleozoic, the Cenozoic, and the Mesozoic are eras. These eras are with the Phanerozoic period which had seen significant biodiversity changes. The Paleozoic era which also means ancient life included the brachiopod, archaeocyathid, blastoid, trilobite and progymnosperm organisms. The Mesozoic era which also means the middle life included dinosaurs, conifers, cycads and the bird (UCMP, 2014). Lastly, the Cenozoic era also known as the recent life included flowering plants, megaloceros, mammoth and the saber-toothed cat.
Mass Extinctions, Their Causes, and Their Species
Five mass extinctions are listed including the Permian, end-Triassic, late Devonian, and Ordovician and Cretaceous mass extinctions. The Ordovician mass extinction was caused by a drop in sea levels and melting of glaciers leading to whipping of 60% percentage of marine genera. Global cooling and meteorites caused the late demonian mass extinction, but these causes are inconclusive resulting in the extinction of 25% of marine families. The Permian extinction was caused by volcanic eruptions, sea loss of oxygen and asteroids resulting in the extinction of 53% of marine families. The end-Triassic extinction was caused by volcanic lava floods and rocks leading to the extinction of 50% of marine genera and unknown numbers of vertebrae deaths. Lastly, the Cretaceous extinction was brought by flooding volcanic eruptions and massive asteroid, 18% of vertebrae’s including dinosaurs and 40% of marine famines were wiped out.
Recent Extinctions
Currently, we sit on a major and more catastrophic extinction which has wiped out animals, plants and unique habitats including the Madagascan Pygmy hippo and the Hawaii chaff flower. The Hawaii chaff flower was destroyed due to overharvesting and cultivation efforts while the Madagascan Pygmy Hippo was wiped by over-harvesting through hunting and habitat destruction. It is human activities and civilization that are causing the current extinctions.
