Abstract
Many people associate addiction with the intake of drugs only. However, this is misguided because addiction is not exclusively tied with drugs. Addiction emanates from the obsession with the taking of a substance or engagement in a certain activity such that the over usage or the over doing interferes with the daily activities such as work or study. This paper analyses the various aspects of addiction. It begins with the introduction that gives an overview of the meaning of addiction and then gives details of the different aspects of addiction. Finally, a conclusion is arrived.
Introduction
Addiction denotes a condition that emanates from the usage of a substance or engagement in an activity that elicits pleasure to the individual but in excessive measures such that the user is no longer able to participate in the usual activities under his/her control, rather the engagements are controlled by the addictive substance. King& Delfabbro (2014) maintains that; the addicted person may not be aware that their behavior is controlled by the addiction. They may not be aware that their behavior is problematic not just to them but also to other people. Areas that are mainly affected by addiction include; work, studies, relationships and health.
Symptoms of addiction
Most of addiction emanate from usage of drugs. This is whereby; a person uses drugs to the extent that they can no longer concentrate in other responsibilities in life without the control of the drug. Felicilda (2015) asserts that; the main symptom of addiction is the inability to control the intake of the substance or the engagement of the activity. For instance if a person cannot control the intake of a drug such as marijuana, then they are addicted. At such situations, the person will not take the drug because they wish so with their heart, rather they are forced to take the drug by the demands of the body following the addiction. On the same note, if a person cannot control the engagement in sex, then they are addicted.
