The lone terrorist pledged allegiance to ISIS killed more than 40 people and left more than 50 wounded in the Pulse Nightclub, in Orlando, Florida. However, this deadliest terrorist event was later exceeded by the Route 91 Harvest music festival attack that occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1, 2017. The manner in which the event was handled raises questions in the intelligence community. The gunman was equipped with an AR-15-type assault rifle and a handgun. Before the arrival of the police officers, the gunman had exchanged fire with the police officer who was on duty at the club. On the arrival of additional officers, they engaged in a gun battle forcing the terrorist to fold back. He held hostage a number of people in a bathroom and informed the police officers that he had explosives.
