Ways of Combatting Global Warming
The known solutions for global warming span human behavior, technologies and policies geared towards more efficient and smarter use of resources (Nunez, 2019). Many of these solutions hinge on human beings changing the way they make and consume energy. This can be attributed to the fact that the burning of fossil fuels (responsible for the bulk of global greenhouse emissions) accounts for 80% of the energy used in the world (ibid).
Global warming mitigation measures can be grouped into three broad categories: those that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; those that enhance carbon sinks: and climate engineering.
Reduction of greenhouse gases emissions is achievable across all the sectors of the economy. Starting with the overarching energy sector, emissions can be reduced by increased efficiency during energy production. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), (2007), on average, power plants fuelled by coal convert only 37 percent of the energy in its fuels to useful energy, losing the rest as heat; leaving the large potential for improvement. Replacing depletable, Carbon dioxide (CO2) intensive fossil fuels with naturally replenishing renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biomass is another measure. A clean source of energy such as nuclear power can also be considered.
The Transport sector, which primarily relies on the continuous burning of fossil fuels for power can be made more energy efficient by switching from fossil fuels to electricity, biofuels and renewable energy sources such as solar power. Encouraging more people to use non-motorized modes of transport and transportation planning policies that encourage rapid mass transport are also other ways of cutting back emissions from the transport sector.
According to Johansen (2001), Industrial efficiency through improved state-of-the-art motor systems can reduce industrial electricity loads. Recycling raw material and improving manufacturing processes can help also help combat global warming.
In buildings, reducing energy demands and improving efficiency can be achieved by replacing fossil heating and lighting with renewable energy sources. Designing buildings for maximum daylighting, passive and active ...
