Introduction
The struggle for independence by the American Colonies led to the outgrowth of a war that is popularly known as the Revolutionary War or the American Revolution in the 18th century. Precisely, the war occurred between 1775 and 1783. Several factors can be attributed to the Revolutionary War, and there is a distinct manner in which the war was executed. Furthermore, the war brought about fundamental changes in American History, and its effect remains vital in shaping American culture and identity.
Causes of the American Revolution
Before the onset of the Revolutionary War, a number of activities perpetrated by the colonist had pushed the colonies to the limit, leaving them no other choice but to repel. The Native Americans were steadfast in their religious beliefs, and as the British colonist permeated themselves into everyday activities of the colonies, they started to worry about their religious freedom, compelling them to resist (Bailyn, 2017). The Seven Years' War also contributed to the emergence of the American Revolution (Bailyn, 2017). The British colonist decided to impose a heavy tax on their colonies to offset payment for their troop who ware participating in the war and also for their service in protecting the colonies after the war (National Museum of American History, n.d.). The tax laws fired up the adoption of other oppressive laws by the colonist, leading to several war attempts by the colonies, including the protests in Boston and the Boston Blockade (PBS, n.d.). Contrary to the British expectation, the oppressive laws united the colonies, even further forming new allegiances and support to other rebels like the Sons of Liberty (PBS, n.d.). Failure of the colonists to heed to the grievances of the representatives sent by the natives to petition against the oppressive acts led to heated rebellion, boycotts, and eventually, the Revolutionary War in 1775.
General Course of the War
The war was executed in some ways. The effort by the natives to persuade the colonist to lift the oppressive acts were all in vain, and they resorted to war as the last option. The war began in Boston when the militia heavily attacked the British troops on an attempt to seize arms and munitions (Whiting & Kjelle, 2019). The war then propelled to Breed Hills, where the Americans suffered defeat and massive causalities in the hands of the well-equipped British troops. A similar effect was witnessed in several cities where the war had spread, including Philadelphia and Trenton (PBS, n.d.). Natives Americans in the thirteen states that had declared themselves independent suffered a setback in the fight for their freedom due to massive loss, only to redeem their hope with a huge victory over the Britons in Saratoga (PBS, n.d.). The victory led to numerous surrenders by the British troops and the signing of military alliance with the French in the fight against the British. Other notable cities were the Americans in collaborations with the French troops fought the Britons vehemently were Virginia, Indiana, and Washington, leading to their surrender.
