Introduction
The statement that the United States is an experiment in representative democracy is agreeable due to the many features embodied in the different rights as stipulated and exercised in America. Although there have been some setbacks in as far as the exercise of democracy is concerned, those cannot be said to overweigh the democracy that has been exercised in the history of America. This paper analyses the depths to which this statement has been proved to be true and also highlights some of the setbacks to the full articulation of democracy in America. In so doing, aspects such as rights of man and rights of Englishmen have been analyzed as well the bill of rights.
Rise of democracy in the US
It is common knowledge that America was colonized by Europe in the 1600 years. During that time, there was limitation for the exercise of democracy due to the colonial powers exercised on America. As the United State attempted to outweigh the colonies, there arose groups of leaders who had zeal to establish not just independence in America, but also democracy which could be exercised by the citizens to fell like worthy human beings. There were fights to establish suffrage for the white males and also to establish popular election of the president. The popular election of the president is a crucial aspect of democracy in any given country. Muhr (2012) acknowledge that; following the achievement of this aspect of democracy in United States, there has been emulation of the same in many countries. Many of the countries that have popular election of their president have borrowed this idea from the United States in view of the democracy that is denoted by this democratic aspect. On these bases then, it is right to assert that the US is an experiment in representative democracy.
The civil war in America can be said to have denoted failures to articulate democracy the leaders of that time. But under scrutiny, it is realized that; there were many attempts by the leaders then to articulate democracy which has been emulated in many other countries during similar events. The civil war can be said to have culminated from many factors. For instance, after the election of President Lincoln in the year 1860, some states such as South Carolina started to secede from the union followed by other states such as Florida and Texas. The confederate states formed their own union and elected their own president. Although this may be viewed as having been the start of the civil war, there is an element of democracy, however thin it may be. This is because, if those states did not sense some form of democracy, it would not have been possible for them to make such daring attempts. But again, following the immaturity of the articulation of democracy at that time, there was inevitable war from such attempts.
According to Tal (2014).The civil war was also attributed to the different lines of development that the two sides of America, the South and the North took after independence. The Southern was mainly oriented to agrarian activities while the Northern America became more industrialized. The Northern began to feel superior over the South and extended some aspects that denoted lack of ex...
