Unsafe nurse staffing practices have become a significant issue in the state of Massachusetts. The staffing crisis has been an issue for a while and has only gotten worse, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 (Ottolini, 2021; PRNews, 2021). As a result of poor staffing practices, nurses are unable to focus adequately on their patients, and this has negatively affected patient care and overall patient outcomes. If left unaddressed, unsafe nurse staffing practices will contribute to high patient mortality, the spread of healthcare-associated infections, medication errors, and preventable patient falls (Haegdorens et al., 2019). Thus, it is important to address the issue to promote the provision of safe patient care.
Idea for Addressing Solution
When hospitals and other employers fail to take necessary steps to promote safe nurse staffing, legislation becomes the most viable option to address the issue. The idea for addressing the issue involves mandated nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. The current law in Massachusetts has mandated nurse-to-patient ratios in intensive care units only (Bartmess et al., 2021), yet other units require safe staffing practices as well. The mandated nurse-to-patient staffing ratios will determine the maximum number of patients a nurse should have, thus ensuring that nurses are not understaffed and overworked. Such legislation is necessary because it will ensure that hospitals and healthcare employers are held accountable by a regulatory body to keep nurse staffing at safe levels (Bartmess et al., 2021).
