Social Justice
Social justice refers to equal distribution and access to opportunities in a society (Hatchett, Elster, Wasson, Anderson, &Parsi, 2015), and this implies that every individual has a right to meet their most basic needs. This concept also applies to a medical setting where patients should have equal access to health-care opportunities. In the video, Living Room Founder tries to provide access to palliative care for cancer patients. Jacob is one of the characters in the video that sufficiently describes social justice. When Jacob became paralyzed and was admitted to a local hospital in Kenya, he eventually developed bed sores due to poor patient care. The reason behind this is limited access to health-care resources, including nurses and beds. At some point in the video, Jacob’s wife explains that at times, Jacob was asked to share a bed with another patient or even sleep on the floor. This is a clear depiction of social injustice in health care because the bedsores that have now penetrated the bones are the reason where Jacob is hospitalized at Living Room, yet they could have been prevented if there was social justice in local hospitals in Kenya. As Patel (2015) indicates, part of social justice implies that patients are provided with the right to avoid health situations that can result in premature death. Jacob was not provided with this right before, but after visiting the Living Room, he has been provided with patient care that is aimed at addressing his bedsores. In fact, some part of the video shows Living Room founder informing him that there are doctors who are willing to treat him by grafting his wounds. This is what social justice entails; providing equal access to all, regardless of their status, through advocacy, as is the case at Living Room.
Maggie’s story highlights the challenges that disadvantaged communities face due to lack of resources, whether economic or social. One of the Catholic Social Teachings that is evident in Maggie’s story is the principle of solidarity. This principle implies that despite our physical, racial, ethnic, or any other differences, we are one family and as such, solidarity is our ability to do good for one another and for all, regardless of the differences (Wright, 2017). In Maggie’s story, the description of the principle of solidarity starts when Maggie is asked to describe her pain when she first went to the Living Room and after her stay at Living Room. When she first went there, her pain levels were very high, as she reveals in the video, but her stay at Living Room has had a considerable impact on the le...
