Research Paper Instructions:

Interview a person that lived a minimum of 10 years outside of the United States. This person may have grown-up in another country or may have moved abroad later in life. The ideal person to interview is an elderly member of our society that did not move to the United States until adulthood. 
You will be conducting an oral history in order to learn more about his/her previous experiences concerning medicine as opposed to what they practice today.
This paper will allow the students the opportunity to:
* learn interviewing skills
* assess the ways in which people either change or incorporate various medical systems across cultures and time
* conduct outside research
* critically analyze practical medical systems and how they relate to class ("class" topics are the following: Medical Anthropology / Anthropology and Medicine / Impacts of Western Medicine / Traditional Chinese Medicine / Shamanism)
Potential Interview Questions:
Background: Where did you live? When did you move to the United States? Were you making your own medical decisions while living abroad?
What type of care did you received when abroad? How is it similar/different to the treatment you receive in the U.S.? (May be helpful to talk about a specific ailment for this assignment.)
Did you experience more than one medical system while abroad? Is this similar or different to what you practice today?
Ask how the medical system(s) discussed in your interview relate to course readings. Are the course readings accurate? Why/ why not?
Does culture relate to how you practiced medicine? In what ways?
Ask for an example to demonstrate their viewpoint.
Tips for conducting an interview:
Engage in “small talk” with your informant (interviewee) before beginning the formal process. Be sure to introduce yourself and spend some time learning more about the person.
Avoid asking yes and no questions. These are known as “closed-ended questions” and they most often do not assist with gathering in-depth knowledge. “Open-ended questions” lead to further elaboration and will help you to complete the class assignment.
Be sure to repeat any interpretations of original statements. Be sure that your interpretations are correct and valid.
Ask for details and examples whenever possible. Be sure to ask for clarification as necessary and be respectful.

A summary and your interpretation of the answers to each of the original interview questions posed at the beginning of this assignment. Introduction
Health care systems differ from one country to another depending on their levels of economy and the existing political systems, which are some of the factors that have resulted in the major reforms in the health sector in several countries in meeting the needs of its citizens (Wynia, 2011). Health systems include organization, people, and actions that promote, restore, and maintain health. That is why different countries use different standards and procedures based on their understanding of a health system. I recently interviewed an elderly neighbor who spent most her life in the US but later relocated to Canada some years back to live with some of her relatives. The interview aimed at understanding her previous experience concerning medicine as opposed to what is being practiced today.
A Summary of the Interview Responses and My Research Findings and Analysis
Based on her experience in Canada, accessing health care requires one to apply for a provincial health card except for inmates and the armed forces. The waiting period for the card is three months. Once the card is assigned, this card can be used anywhere because it contains personal details (Moss et al., 2011). It is a convenient way of receiving timely medical attention because one needs to produce the card when he visits the doctor without having to fill in admission forms or pay admission fees. However, there are few primary care doctors in Canada. Health care in Canada is based on the simple scheme; every legal resident is fully covered through a publicly financed provincial plan (Moss et al., 2011). This is different from the US medical scheme. In the US health systems, patients rely on insurance principles in that care depends on the type of coverage. For Americans, one has to purchase insurance coverage to access care. Despite having affordable insurance options and subsidies to cover medical costs, lower income earners are not able to access the affordable health care (Wynia, 2011).
In the two countries, healthcare systems are very different in a way that in Canada health care is publicly funded and is more equitable. In the US, tiered policies have resulted in people having varying benefits depending on where people live, their age, their workplace, and how much one can afford to spend on health insurance. In the US, unlike Canada, the federal government does not guarantee universal health care to its citizens. However, public funded health care program focuses on the elderly, physically challenged children and poor citizens. In Canada, one cannot make their health decisions; the government determines certain decisions (Moss et al., 2011).
Treatment
“While living in Canada,” the person I interviewed stated, “rheumatoid arthritis is a common medical problem just as it is in the US.” She experienced frequent pain on her knees hence sought medical attention while living in Canada.
