Differences between IPC and IPE
IPE and IPC are related but separate concepts. Longhurst (2020) submits that interprofessional education (IPE) occurs when two or more healthcare professionals (or students) engage in learning with, from, and about each other. IPE is critical to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills of professionals so that they can function effectively in an interprofessional team. This fact suggests that it aims to improve collaboration and enable better patient outcomes (Dickerson, 2019). Conversely, interprofessional collaboration (IPC) involves a partnership between two or more health professionals from different backgrounds, patients, their families, carers and communities to ensure the delivery of patient-centered quality care (Sullivan et al., 2015).
Impact of Collaboration between Disciplines
How the different disciplines work together in each type of collaboration
Reeves et al. (2011) presented a framework that describes how healthcare professionals work together in various healthcare settings. Their conceptual framework emphasizes the contingent nature of interprofessional work and how teams respond to local needs in healthcare. The model has three looser forms of interprofessional work with a varying focus of activities. For example, teamwork is at the center and has the most “focused” activities because its members have high levels of shared responsibility, interdependence, and integration. However, as you move outwards towards collaboration and coordination, members have less of a shared identity and integration.
Although shared identity and integration is less critical in collaboration, individuals still have a sense of shared accountability. Also, collaborating health professionals clarify goals and roles as well as team tasks, while there is some degree of interdependence among them.
