Introduction
According to the World Health Organization (2016), about 422 million individuals around the world have diabetes, and about 3.7 million individuals die because of high blood glucose and diabetes. Among these people who are inflicted with diabetes, a large population has type II diabetes (adult onset) as compared to with type I diabetes Childhood onset). This implies that there is a lack of our knowledge and ability in terms of prevention since Type II diabetes is supposedly the ‘preventable’ one. In some major countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, etc. healthcare is free (or there are established health programs at least) and thus diseases such as diabetes could easily be identified by the onset and thus prevented. However, in other third world countries, these rights might not be in place and thus going for regular checkups and consultations with the doctors might prove to be very costly. Coming from this idea the authors of the article that we would be reviewing have tried to expound more on the research done between dermatoglyphic and diabetes early detection. The first one is a subcategory of forensics while the second a major part of the medical field. Nevertheless, the authors of the article focused on how dermatoglyphic, the study of features of the hand, palm, fingers, and feet, correlates to one’s likelihood of developing diabetes (Nayak, Shrivastava, Kumar, & Balkund, 2015).
Importance of the Study
In their article, the authors focused on the state of the Maharashtra in India. More particularly, they employed 50 patients who are confirmed and diagnosed with Type II Diabetes Mellitus by India’s Department of Medicine itself. The main objective of the researchers is to find a correlation between dermatoglyphic patterns in the hands and/or feet of the patients that could then be generalized to indicate whether a person with the same pattern would develop diabetes. This research is of immense importance since Maharashtra has one of the biggest urban and rural population around the world with the number of inhabitants reaching up to 123 million people (indiaonlinepages.com, n.d.). By being able to develop a way to detect diabe...
