Regardless of how much one prepares, there is always a level of uncertainty that comes with making a big life change. A major life adjustment that I have undergone involves changing from floor nursing to administrative nursing. This was a difficult undertaking but I had to do it because I aspired to advance my career and be part of decision-making in healthcare boardrooms. This undertaking is comparable to a great extent with the change in organizations. In this paper, I explain my experience of the change process and how factors including degree of control, clarity, degree of change previously experience, and positive attitude affected my reactions to the change. Deciding to shift from floor nursing to administration is one of the most challenging life adjustments I have had to make. In the wake of changes in the healthcare industry, I aspired to take an expanded role in influencing healthcare decisions. I figured out that a change to administration would be the ideal move if I wanted to have a more profound impact in improving healthcare and driving policy change. As a floor nurse, I would influence healthcare through the care of patients but as an administrator, I would sit in boardrooms and be part of key decisions that affect healthcare. The new change would include bigger responsibilities and I had to prepare and be ready to face the uncertainty that came with the new undertaking. One key element of change management is readiness assessment (Change Management, n.d.). According to the Change Management website, it is important for an organization to assess the scope of change. In my case, I had to determine how big the change was, the people affected, and whether it was gradual or radical. The change to administration was a big change that affects the direction my career would take. It also affected the people around me including family members, friends, as well as the colleagues I had built strong relationships with as a floor nurse. For my family members, the change would mean spending reduced time with them because I had to further my education to be competent enough for administrative nursing. The support of family members and friends was integral in the change process. This support system, therefore, made the change smoother. The degree of control is a key factor that affects the reaction to change. How much control did I have over change situation? According to Bhandola (2015), it is important to maintain control throughout the change process. I had a significant level of control because I was the one who made the decision to shift to administrative nursing. However, while I was determined, I had still had some uncertainty about how the process would turn out. In the context of organizational change, resistance to change would occur as a response to losing control (Ovidiu & Lester, 2016). I had some control over what I needed to do to become a nurse administrator but there was a little uncertainty about how that would turn out.
