NUR 4828 Instructions Organizational Culture Assessment F13 NUR 4828 Foundations of Nursing Healthcare Leadership & Management Organizational Culture Assessment Assignment Instructions Organizational culture is a key driver of organizational performance, long-term sustainability and the quality of care provided to patients. The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and ability to apply relevant principles and concepts covered in the course on this topic. Before you begin, carefully review these instructions and the grading rubric for this assignment to avoid unnecessary loss of points. The score on this assignment constitutes 25% of the total course grade. This assignment is to be a summary of the learning about your organization's culture that you acquired during your service learning hours. Before you start your Service Learning Hours, review the influencing topic areas listed on page 3 of these instructions. Select individuals to interview and experiences for your service hours so you can gather as much information about how the culture of your organization shapes, or is influenced by, these topics. Remember that culture is a somewhat ethereal concept, in part because it is complex and cannot be absolutely measured or quantified. As a result, most of the research---and most definitions---have focused on human perceptions and describing the characteristics that individuals associate with organizational culture. During your Service Learning hours it is just as important to observe behaviors, attitudes and beliefs as it is to gather specific program or policy information. This assignment involves being able to accurately identify, and describe specific behavior and/or event examples and link them to relevant principles and concepts found in current literature and research about organizational culture and behaviors. A. Paper Content 1. Select 2 of the major topics from the list provided below. Using at least two of the bullets under the topic areas you have selected, describe how these topics shape or are influenced by your organization's culture and behaviors. For example, if you select Leadership as a topic, choose bulleted items such as “describe the predominant leadership style within the organization” and “how leaders and the organizational culture set the tone for communications” to guide your discussion on leadership and the organizational culture. Introduce each of your selected two topics by providing a short discussion about the importance of the topic within any healthcare organization. 2. Prepare an APA formatted paper at least four pages in length (i.e., four pages is the minimum) that includes the components outlined in B below. 3. Support your opinions/ideas with a minimum of five recent peer-reviewed references. One can be the Marquis and Huston text. The other four references will need to be derived from peer reviewed journals and/or other reliable sources. B. Required components/elements of the paper include: 1. Title page (page 1) 2. Introductory paragraph introducing the reader to the subject of your paper (organizational culture) and the major concepts that will be presented in the paper. Include a brief description of the organization that you have assessed (you do not need to identify the organization, you can use a pseudonym). The introductory paragraph follows the title of the paper which should appear at the top of page 2; note that the title serves as the section header for your introductory paragraph(s). Prepare your discussion based on the assumption that the reader knows nothing about the topic or purpose of your writing---as you would if you were preparing a manuscript for publication. Write in third person. 3. Body includes the discussion of 2 topics and of the bulleted items that you have selected and researched in your service learning experience and references. Organize the body using Level 1 section headings for each topic you have selected and Level 2 section headings for each bulleted item; see page 62 in the APA manual for information on use of section heading. Describe which groups or departments are perceived to be “powerful” and why. o Discuss how conflict management is influenced by the leadership styles and organizational culture. Give specific examples. - Quality and Safety o Describe how this organization is responding the Quality and Patient Safety Movement o Describe how (or if) Quality and Patient Safety initiatives have influenced or changed the organizational culture o Describe the extent to which your organization fulfills its obligations to patients based on the criteria outlined in either the AHA's Patient Care Partnership document or Florida's Patient's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. (Copies of these documents are available within Module 4.) - Economic Environment o Discuss the role of nursing leadership and management in promoting and sustaining the organization's financial health. o Describe how or if the organization engages frontline staff in issues that impact the financial health of the organization o Discuss one major external topic that could have an impact on the finances of this organization. - Legal, Regulatory and Political Environment o Describe how the organization promotes patient advocacy within the broader community o Discuss which accreditations, certifications or recognitions this organization maintains or seeks. Discuss how these awards influence the culture of the organization o Discuss how this organization influences or influenced by legislative issues at the local, state or federal level. o Describe how the organization helps nurses learn how to protect the organization and themselves from malpractice claims. - Managing Human Resources o Describe behaviors of the leaders, other staff and organizational practices or policies that create or inhibit a motivating environment. o Discuss how the organization prepares for and manages change. Describe aspects of the organizational culture that may promote or inhibit change. o Describe “on-boarding” programs and behaviors that promote “enculturation” of new employees o Describe the organization's approach to career development for staff and for leaders. o Discuss whether it is the culture of the organization to promote primarily from within or is new talent always sought and what impact this has on the organization. Quality and Safety 1. Describe how this organization is responding the Quality and Patient Safety Movement. The organization responding to the quality and patient safety movement by having unit patient safety officers program(UPSOs) they spend time observing staffs, asking questions, inspecting alarms and checking medical records as they complete the required Safety Rounds and Monitoring Tools. 2. Describe the extent to which your organization fulfills its obligations to patients based on the criteria outline in either the AHA. I will attach the copy to assignment. The organization fulfills its obligation by making sure they always re-enforce the Florida pt bill of right. Managing Human Resources 1. Discuss how the organization prepares for and manages change. Describe aspects of the organization culture that may promote or inhibit change. Organization culture is described by Robbins & Coulter as the shared values, beliefs, or perceptions held by employees within an organization or organizational unit. The relationship between organizational culture and job satisfaction need to be promote because if they have enough nurses on the floor the work can be completed. Also, the organization has a strong culture with common values and codes of conduct for its employees, which help them accomplished its missions and goals. 2. Discuss whether it is the culture of the organization to promote primarily from within or is new talent always sought and impact this has on the organization. Culture sets workplace tone: Going to work has never been easy. Downsizing and instability have existed within many different fields of employment. When positive in nature, the organization culture can result in tremendous output with dedicated team members confidently steering the organization toward its goals. Organizational culture and behavior can be said to be a description of beliefs, values and attitude that show the characteristics of the organization, this are said to be unique to the organization and show the psychological environment found within the organization (Sashkin, 2010). These values and beliefs can either be written or unwritten rules of the organization, they are unique to the organization and in most cases have been developed over time and are thought to have a positive effect on the employees and the organization as a whole. They can loosely be defined as a silent code of ethics in an organization. Organization culture and behavior has an effect on productivity and performance, this is because it provides guidelines for its workers on how to attend to their duties while still giving them freedom to show their personality (Lunenburg, 2010). This paper seeks to carry out an organizational culture assessment of the hospital. The group observes quality control and safety management as well as management of human resource is concern. The topics that will be covered include the Quality and Safety of patient initiatives, and initiatives of human resource management.
Quality and Safety
These two matters are intertwined greatly when it comes to matters of healthcare, one cannot be present without the other because they are symbiotic in nature and feed of each other to develop. For there to be safety in a hospital it is essential that not only are the services offered be of quality but also the equipment and staff need to both be of high quality and maintain this same high quality in issuance of their services respectively (Sashkin, 2010).
Describe how this organization is responding the Quality and Patient Safety Movement.
The hospital has tried working on these two aspects; they have a set of measures which they use to test and rate the quality and safety of services offered by their staff. These measures of quality are;
* Outcomes - These are data collected from patients who have visited the hospital and services offered to them. They range from customer relations to administering of actual treatment to the patient. They help the hospital analyze how best the staff handle the problems the face on a daily basis and the outcome of such problems (Cameron & Quinn, 2011).
* Process - This is where the hospital seeks to look at whether it`s followed a systematic step of processes it has laid with regards to patient care, this is at times referred to as evidence-based processes and are known to improve the quality of care and safety of patients. Unit Safety Officer Programs (USOPs) maybe introduced to observe staff, medical records and ask questions among other things (Hersen, 2012).
