An interview of a health leader on the use of new technology shows the process, the events associated with the idea and some possible implementation barriers. Primary health care settings and hospitals would functional much better with the incorporation of electronic health records (EHR). Despite the fact that EHR is not a new form of technology in the United States, there are signs of slow adoption of the integrated versions. The interviewee shows more confidence in the EHR system as a physician; the system has inspired confidence and improved levels of satisfaction within the health care sector (Kruse et. al., 2016). This paper highlights some of the major components and issues associated with the electronic health record system.
According to the physician, EHR can be linked to many benefits such as improved communication between various health care providers and patients, improved patient care, reduced risks of error and safe practice. The technology is useful to the health providers and other stakeholders. For this reason, the implementation should be done after possible risks are addressed. The physician mentions that health leaders have the mandate to examine possible risks in terms of system failure, medical error as well as legal requirements. Risks of malpractice and lawsuit can be minimized when health leaders assume their responsibilities regarding the EHR system and practice. The leader mentions that the process of incorporating the selected technology requires the efforts of every stakeholder. For instance, hospitals should abide to policies that demand regular system upgrades and staff training so as control events and avoid the risk of error (Adler-Milstein et. al., 2016).
The leader wishes to adopt and implement the EHR system in all hospitals and health care facilities in the United States. He points out that the process should be easier given that the Federal Government has offered more incentives with reference to the technology. However, many hospitals have not adopted the technology despite the offer of incentive. According to studies, rural hospitals and practices steered by physicians of 55 years and above are less likely to use the system. The health leader would encourage more hospitals to adopt the EHR system; incentivized payments are being offered to facilities that utilize the system to improve quality. Medicare and Medicaid have always been geared towards improving the health care sector. This technology ensures that patient information is capture accurately and that patients are handed copies of information regarding their health. Furthermore, the exchange of information between physicians and quality improvement is largely dependent on technology such as the EHR. The interviewee highlights that there are unforeseen mistakes that health care organizations might experience. It is important for every hospital to ensure that specified timeframes and certain milestones are met before adopting the system so as to avoid penalties and fines (Henry & Patel, 2016).
The health care leader also talked about possible barriers to the implementation of EHR system: lawsuit and legal complications and increased risk of medical error. The success of any system depends on close investigation and address of implementation barriers.
