Historical Nurse Leader: Lilian Wald
Identify and describe the nurse leader you chose.
The nurse leader under study is Lilian Wald. Wald was the third child to Max D. Wald and Minnie Schwarz, a Jewish couple who had found success in the United States after immigrating there during the European Revolutions in 1848. Being born to a successful family in 1867 meant that Wald could have everything she wanted, including a great education. She schooled at Miss Cruttenden’s English/French Boarding and Day School and excelled. However, she had to put off college plans for a while because, at 16, she was considered too young for college. So, she set off on a plan to tour the world and even worked as a newspaper reporter for some time. But her life as a nurse was sparked by a friend who was at the time working as a nurse.

Wald was born when the United States had just come out of the Civil War. The country was in the Reconstruction Era, and this period came with its challenges to the central government. At this point, the states that had seceded were being reintegrated into the United States. The Reconstruction Era lasted 12 years, from 1865 to 1877. After this era, the country transitioned to an era that was marked by lasting transformation. According to Hirschman and Mogford (2009), the U.S. was undergoing its own industrial revolution in this period. Furthermore, immigration was booming in the country, and the choice settlements for many immigrants were large cities. Many immigrants were the backbone of the American industrial revolution since they provided the main workforce for the American industries (Hirschman and Mogford, 2009). So, as Wald was starting off as a nurse, she got to see first-hand the deplorable conditions in which the immigrants lived.
