Culture and cultural practices and beliefs influence many areas of health. Culture influences how people approach health and health promotion activities, including incorporating healthy foods into their diet. According to Monterrosa et al. (2020), cultural practices and norms influence food choice in a complex manner because different cultures assign value and meaning to food differently. As a result, communities may end up with high-risk nutritional practices o stay aligned to their culture. In a country such as the US with diverse cultures, nutritional practices are highly influenced by the cultures of these various groups. The aim of this paper is to explore the nutritional practices of Native Hawaiians and African-Americans.
Summary
Native Hawaiians and African Americans have adopted high-risk nutritional behaviors as part of their culture. These behaviors have dire consequences on their health. Below is a summary of each culture’s high-risk nutritional practices.
Native Hawaiians
Native Hawaiians have been forced to adapt their nutritional practices due to environmental changes. According to Kai et al. (2022), traditional Hawaiian nutritional practices involved the consumption of foods rich in fiber. However, contemporary Hawaiian nutritional practices involve consuming foods with high fat and sugar content. This has contributed to the high rates of obesity and other diet-related health issues among Native Hawaiians. Kai et al. (2022) indicate that Hawaiians consume more sugar-sweetened beverages and fewer vegetables and fruits as part of their diet. These issues can be traced back to childhood when Native Hawaiians introduced complementary feeding. According to Fialkowski et al. (2021), Native Hawaiians mix a lot of their traditional foods with sugar to make what is now known as the contemporary Hawaiian diet. For instance, Poi, a traditional Hawaiian thick paste made of pounded cooked starch, is now mixed with sugar. Poi is one of the dishes introduced as part of the Hawaiian complementary feeding practices. Adding significant amounts of sugar into the dish makes this dish unhealthy for young children. Fialkowski et al. (2021) reveal that such dishes are one of the reasons why most Native Hawaiians have a higher risk of obesity and overweight, which eventually contributes to other health issues.
African-Americans
African-Americans have incorporated a traditional cuisine with some unhealthy elements, which has created high-risk nutritional practices. As part of their culture, African-Americans consume a lot of greasy food. Swierad et al. (2017) reveal that they love cooking their dishes with lard, and it has been culturally passed down that the greasier the food, the better it is. This is a high-risk nutritional practice because lard has high trans-fat that affects the health of African-Americans. As Howard et al.
